I think the nicest thing one can do is pay attention to them. Set aside some time, ask them questions about their past and the old days and they might surprise you. Take some older person to lunch or a trip to the beauty salon.
If you're in their home look at their old photos and ask them about them.
Just simple things that mean a lot.

Respect yourselves first! The old are not weak or were they always bitter, life makes a good person bitter, most elderly people just need a little help mostly a ride or take short trip to the grocery store on your bike, or yardwork, older people are set in their ways for a reason because if they did not have their beliefs they would not have any reason to look forward, when you go through life and you make mistakes don't you ask yourself what could have I done differant, well these people have and sometimes they did not interact with a decent person at that time.
They also look at money differently, as I went to the store and had .25 cents change she held out her hand for it, as in their time it was a lot of money.

older people are not necessarily a weak group.....respect them for the knowledge they have--for the lives they've lived --and the fact that they made it this far

We should listen to the experience they have to share. They've gone through alot that people still are having problems with. They can tell us what worked and what didn't.
If they still want to be mean and jerky then they deserve no respect.
