Ikea is nice if you live by one. But I would suggest Bed Bath and Beyond, or Linens and Things. As far as what to get. I know that bed bath and beyond has a check list for what "normal" dorms need. Find out what size bed you have and get sheets for that size. A new pillow is always nice. Towels, a shower caddy, a medicine chest (just a little box with Tylenol etc. in it...it is one of those things you do not think about until you have a killer headache), a first aid kit, Alarm clock, a good desk lamp because most dorms are not well lit, a trash can, a dorm size fridge and microwave, laundry hamper/laundry basket and detergent. A single set of dishes...meaning a plate, bowl, spoon, etc. and cups, washing liquid for dishes. Pictures and picture frames (things that make your room feel like home) Desk set (pens, pencils, etc) television, computer. Dry erase board or cork board for messages. Telephone. Area rug and bath mats.
You want to make your dorm room as close to your room at home as possible. You also want it to be an environment conducive to learning and having fun...make sure you have an organized space...utilize the space under your bed and in your closet space there are plenty of products out there that make dorm life better!

be sure to get twin extra long since that is what most dorms use. Walmart has sheet sets now for $12, but if you wait until like the end of july everyone will have good sales on them. Some bigger stuff like a frig or lamp i would wait to get where ever it is that you are going.

Bed, Bath and Beyond, Target, Walmart
You'll need a couple sheets, blankets/duvets, pillow, bath towels, shower caddy, bathrobe...But don't buy/bring too much. You can always get more stuff after you've moved in if you really need it. (I brought a desk lamp from home but only used a couple times)

Dumpster and sidewalk giveaways at the campus that you plan
on attending. At the end of each semester there are plenty of great giveaway situations. From rich kids that changed their minds and want to just get a ticket and go back home or they
decided to see the world with three of their stoner friends.

sears, wal-mart, target, jc penny's, and organize it. These are all great places to get stuff for your dorm room. I suggest to get plenty of shelves or things to organize your stuff to keep it neat.

Walmart & Target
You don't need really great quality stuff cause you will only be using it for a short period of time.

Ikea. They are like the holy grail when it comes to furnishing small spaces, and they are cheap and very stylish too.
