i think matarazzi provoked him, saying something that offended him very much for him to do something so drastic!perhaps the pressure was starting to get to him and he was begining to get agitated and to add to that an opponent player insulted him so he and took it out on him! but in the eyes of millions of zidane fans he is still the knight of france and a magnificent player to be remembered for all time!

Yes. Matarazzi said "psst. Zidane. I'll give you a $10,000,000 to head-butt me in the chest. It's better than going out with a fizzle when you lose in penalty shoot outs. Besides, it'll make us both famous!".
