Think about this- if the Civil War in the U.S. was won by the confederates, it's very possible that slavery would still be acceptable today. However, that is not the case, and we know better. If the Nazis managed to take over the world, and you and I were born Aryian, we would see no problem with burning minorities who were unlike us. Other things to think about, Prohibition? Was repealing that a good or bad decision? Is who/whatever decides is socially acceptable really something we can trust to set our morals and standards?

Okay, granted, Mrs. Texan, I didn't do that much historical research (Hugs back!). To be honest I flind history to be the most pointless class, as it has very little to do with my future. In fact, if we knew nothing about past, we could completely re-write what is socially acceptable and what isn't. Anyway, reguardless of what did, or did not happen in the past, the social morals we have today are still there. What do these morals support that it shouldn't? What does it not support that it should?

“A Nation that forgets its past, is doomed to repeat it”.
Winston Churchill
I totally agree with you about history class, I never was very interested in it, however, it is important that we learn from our past so we don't keep making the same mistakes or forget our successes.
(I'm not trying to be mean...just offer a different perspective)
To answer your question--
Casual sex, one night stands and multiple partners. I don't consider myself a prude and have done all of these but sometimes I wonder how many times we have before our luck runs out.

We all have to educate ourselves and find our own paths in life. You can say what if all the time, but what if didn't happen. And we are here, today, in this world. And we have to learn what is right and wrong. There are many things today that are still wrong and in 50 years or so might end up being completely changed. Just look at the world of breastfeeding. All throughout history, every single mother breastfed their children. If they did not, the child would die. If they could not, a wet nurse would do it for them, or the child would die. Then 50 years ago or so, formula was created. And at first, it was considered a rich persons alternative. Only the rich use formula. Then it somehow changed to becoming more common and quite normal to formula feed rather than breastfeed. Then people were saying breastfeeding is only for the rich women who have the money to stay at home all the time. Now, a woman who breastfeeds her child in a manner that was expected 100 years ago, is looked at as wrong or weird. However, there are many people working right now to change the way society views this.
This is just one example of what is considered socially acceptable. Even though doctors and everyone says it's best. People just say "Ewwwww". Or something similar. Instead of seeing it as it really is. A baby eating what nature intended.
And societies judgement changes depending on the society. For example. When I was living in Korea, women there are still treated as second class citizens. Myself being an American woman, it was hard for me to accept. I guess I am a bit of the pro woman type. I was stationed there while I was in the military and it was hard to deal with the differences in culture geared toward women. All the comments from the Korean men who felt it was the greatest thing to see a white woman who shaves. lol. And many other countries have different norms. Also another interesting thing I noticed is men and feelings. How they act toward each other varies depending on cultures. Some places men openly show their emotions and even openly touch other men. Not sexual but little things like hands on their knees and even holding hands. It might be inappropriate to hold a girls hand but you will see 2 guys walking hand in hand and 2 girls walking hand in hand. However, in the US, you wouldn't see that with men unless they were dating.
The world is an interesting place! And if you have never been outside the US. You have nothing to compare normal to. Do you really know if it is normal, or just what you were told and raised to believe it is?

First, the US North had slaves too. In fact, a northern state was the first to adopt the practice of using slaves. So it would not have been a matter of the south winning...it was the emancipation, among other things, that did the job, thankfully.
The German Nazi party lost, but there are still many around with the same ideals...and sadly, they dont see any problem with how they look at things.
As long as we have different cultures there will be different ways of viewing things.....In some places a handicapped child is killed, or a daughter is sold into slavery for cash..or a host of other things happen. Its a matter of the culture you are raised in that makes makes something ok or not.
We as Americans tend to look at others and pass judgement, however, plenty that we do is "wrong" to others who have different values......even within our own borders. So my answer is, whats socially acceptable varies depending on many environmental factors.

Pretending that AIDS is not the direct result of certain actions by certain groups. The Gays used the horrible disease as a way to piggy back, no pun intended, into being socially acceptable while at the same time making it politically incorrect to question many aspects of the virus and how it moves about. We simply pretend that certain parts of reality, like some communicable diseases, no longer exist because to do so would be to undermine an entire ideology. I call this the "Burger King" view of the world. You know, you get to have it your way even if it means eating crud. You just smile and convince yourself that everything is all right.

First, Hon, You need to do some more research..
The civil war was fought BECAUSE the individual states wanted to govern their own selves. It was NOT fought over slavery. Did you know that 1 in 4 slave owners was black? Did you know that it was the black people who went over and captured the black people and brought them here? Did you know that the black people captured and sold their own countrymen to these same black people who brought them in those awful ships here? I suggest you go and really find the truth..
I suggest while you are at it you check into Jewish history and see just how those folks felt back then. Just because Hitler believed that way the majority of folks did NOT..
Lastly, You can`t trust your standards to anyone. They are YOUR standards.. You make your own decisions.. To be good or bad.. It has nothing to do with Prohibition. Drunks make a choice to drink that beer. The will make it in the bath tub if they have to.
No one is in control of YOUR morals and standards but YOU...
God bless & Hugs from Texas. {:-)

You are taking inventory of our moral blindspots. This is my collection so far. 1. We don't value relationships. We sacrifice our children and family for the demands of a consumption economy. 2. We have completely lost all expectation for interacting peacefully. We ignore conflict or attack conflict. Neither one will result in reconciliation. So we vacilate between ignoring people we should care about. Or attacking those we cannot ignore. There is a wide territory between the two extremes. 3. Our consumption economy is eating out the moral bone marrow of our people and country. And no one is saying STOP. 4. We believe Adam Smith (he's the economics guy right? ) wrote part of the bible. He did not. 5. We believe capitalism is a judeo-christian value. IT IS NOT.

There is nothing that is universally accepted as socially acceptable. But in a general sense p*rn*(destroys marriages, creates sexual deviants), Abortion ( senseless act's of brutality) Pre-marital s*x (affects your response to your future spouse plus brings in emotional ties and diseases)Alcohol abuse, homosexuality, profanity, etc. The list just goes on.

I think the way we don't care for one another goes against better judgement...society has these weird rules that give me hives...have even made it illegal for people to drink while driving or smoke in public...but you can go to any resturant in the world and eat yourself to death...it's funny to me that if I were walking down the street with a cigarette in one hand and a Whopper in the other most people would tell me to put down the cigarette and may not even notice the burger

whoa. i think you got a lot of answers that made me realize how little people think for themselves... a lot of what people have listed here are NOT things that are "socially acceptable and go against better judgement"... they are things that are socially UNacceptable (proven by the outcry of everyone who answered) with NO logical reason. I'D say what's socially acceptable that goes against better judgement is, (sorry to talk in a circle) premature judgement and a total inablility to see things from someone else's view.
