I agree with you. What Zidane did was unprofessional. If this had been his first World Cup ever, we could forgive him. But a world class player like him shouldn't have reacted that way. He was the captain and should have thought about his team first. If Materazzi really insulted him, he could have beaten him later, after the game. His headbutt was a display of bad sportsmanship. A really sad way to end his career.
No matter what people say, I think Italy deserved to win the World Cup. Their captain didn't let them down in a selfish, childish way. Italy were the better team, more cohesive, all working together towards a common goal. Winning a World Cup tournament isn't all about who dominates more during the game, or who has the better midfield, or who's more aggressive. It's also a matter of spirit, team work, cooperation, being there for your team anywhere, any time. When France defeated Brazil, Zidane inspired the whole team. They may have not made it without him. How could he forget that? In that sense, Fabio Cannavaro as the captain of Italy and the 10 Italian players who scored the goals for their team all throughout the tournament deserved to lift the Cup more than Zidane and his teammates.

I also think it is jealousy. When a team reaches such a high level it is obvious that it will cause others to find something to say. If Italy made it through the whole way it is simply because they are a great team. This is a a fact and other people's opinions cannot change this. Italy won and Italy was the best. So please shut up all the rest!

Today's match was great Juventina and that is what people should be focusing on. A really hard fought final by every player on the field. They all gave their heart and soul in this match today. The match was all a spectator could ask for. Both teams played extremely well. Congratulations to Italy on their success and Congrats to France for the challenge that made it a great final. There really were no losers. It was such a close game.

The soccer cup is a big deal to everybody. When their own teams lose, its upsetting and people make up any excuse as to why their team lost. Its just jealousy and sore losers. I said last week, may the best team win and Italy did! Therefore the best team for 2006 Fifa World Cup is Italy! Gooooooo Italy!!

I haven't heard anyone trash Italy in such a long time I'm surprised to find someone who thinks trashing Italy is so ubiquitous.
Italy gets far more good press (at least in the USA) than bad press. It is one of the most desired vacation locations, and admired for fashion, engineering, food, and of course for the people.
