It is but the one they give the winner is a different one. The original trophy was made with enough space at its base to have several teams engraved on it... or enough till the world cup in 2038. I think we're at the 9th one or something (there was another cup before this one). What happens is that the winner, in this year's case, Italy, takes the original trophy home for 4 years then returns it at the same time they get a replica that is not made of pure gold. This way the original trophy is handed to every team that wins the world cup. When the space is filled with all the winning teams, a new world cup has to be presented.

Yes it is made of gold. I was curious about it too, here is what I found from this web site:
http://www.all-soccer-info.com/World_Cup_History.htm

"The FIFA World Cup was founded in 1971. It was designed by Silvio Gazzanigi of Italy. Made of 18-carat gold and malachite, the cup is 36 cm tall and weighs 5 kg. The sculpture depicts two triumphant football players holding a globe in their raised hands. The trophy is passed on to each winning team that gets to keep an identical (but gold-plated) replica. The making of the statue cost about $50,000, today its value is estimated to over $10,000,000. The World Cup trophy that being used today has been staged for 8 times from 1974 until now. "

The World Cup trophy stands 36.5 centimetres (14.4 in) tall and is made of 5 kilograms (11 lbs) of 18 carat (75%) solid gold with a base (13 centimetres [5.1 in] in diameter) containing two layers of malachite.

I think the gold medals are actually made of silver, but plated with gold. It is way too expensive to make pure gold medals.

I don't think so. Gold averages a market price of $300 an ounce or more, and it would take a lot of solid gold to make the world cup. Also, solid gold is very valuable and highly maleable (easy to bend) so they would have to blend it with other materials to keep it from bending, sagging, or being stolen. ^-^
