Depending on your learning style, typing may be the way for you to go. What I did (because desks were very small at both universities that I attended for undergrad and graduate school) was to write my notes, where I could have explanations and underlined things and stars indicating important things that the professors wanted me to know. Then I would take that note book and type my notes out in an organized fashion including the other notes that I had taken in the margins. Typically, or at least in my case, I would find that things within my notes maybe interrelated and I could draw arrows and make such notations on paper...and then take the time and effort to make it functional on my computer later. Then, you are seeing the material twice and it doubles as a study session!

Forget nerdy. You are not there to worry about what other people think of you. You are there to get the best education you can get. You are paying for this. Do whatever you need to do to learn the most. Years from now, it won't matter if someone thought you were a nerd in some freshman English class. It will matter to an employer, however, if you got good grades.
In the future, your wife and kids won't care if you used a laptop. They will care if you are making enoough money to meet their needs.
Do whatever it takes to get a good grade. Forget about anyone thinking you are a nerd.

Hey I am going to be a junior in the fall at SMU and a lot of my classmates use their laptop to take notes. Personally I don't becuase I cannot type fast enough so it is just easier for me to write them. But there has been quite a few who type, in fact in one of my small lecture classes I was the only one to not type.

a lot of people actually take notes on laptops, but i wouldn't advise doing it in say, chemistry or math. there are too many symbols to make typing any faster than writing.
also it is a good rule of thumb to make sure that if you are going to take notes you have enought battery to do it for the whole class, it is really annoying to have to switch halfway through to paper and pen.
well i hope this helps.
you must be a freshman.

HAHA.. depending on if other people do it i guess.. I never found the need to do it because the rest of the class doesnt. However i regret it afterwards when I have to go back through my horrible note taking writing.. I say just do it but dont play games on it. People who do that are so lame..

Not nerdy at all. It's the easiest way to go. More than half of all college students will use their laptops in class more than once.

Why worry about what everyone thinks? When it comes to your own education, you should do whatever that helps you. When you finish the course with the highest grade, you'll be the one having the last laugh.

I was in college for 7 years and never saw a single person taking notes on a laptop. On paper, yes. On a laptop, no.
And yes, it is nerdy.

Many people do that, but I like it better with pen and a paper notebook.
