Books:
Depending on the content, a lot of people and groups would appreciate the books: Local schools, local churches, community groups, hospitals...I would just ask around.

Also, local coffee shops that have bookshelves may be open to books that would be of interest to their patrons and also have an attractive exterior to match the decorating style.

Magazines
...depends on how many you are trying to unload.

You might want to check with a group that works with non-english speakers (ESL classes, TOEFL Classes, etc.) Magazines could be a fun/easy tool for the people learning English to practice on a simpler writing style.

(Also...which ones...National Geographic will hold its value long after a People magazine will) Some school teachers might like some of these...Doctor's offices, anywhere with a waiting room. But you just can't dump them off in mass.

Someone moving might be able to use magazines and newspapers to wrap dishes.

You can always donate books and magazines to nursing homes for the people who live there. What about shelters for abused women, A good will store or Saint Vincent DePaul. these are charitable organizations. Red cross shelters, or even send them to our troops. They would give them something to occupy their minds if even for a few minutes.

Hospitals, nursing homes, second hand stores. If you have children's books, call a local school...school's can always use more books (I'm a Teacher who never turns down a donated book)

Try some of your local schools. A lot of elementary schools use magazines for projects.

Shelters for abused women and children, organizations that offer early education programs to low-income families, and you can contact local elementary schools and ask if they're interested as well.
