Most ppl don't really know the odds of winning they play because there is a chance of winning. Why ppl play games of chance varies on who the person is, some play because they are hoping to gain more money from gambling, you know a person has a problem with this when they go and spend their money that is supposed to go towards bills and other expenses on the chance of walking away with more than they spent in the first place. Just think, the young are possibly learning this at an early age, you have seen those claw machines out there, are you aware of how much money some invest on the possiblility of walking away with a stuffed animal or cheap jewelry?

gambling is a hobby, or purely entertainment for most people. And most people know their limit...as far as how much they can lose. Now, you assume odds of winning are "very slim", and this is not true at all. Casinos, and lottery tickets are rigged to pay out 49% (over many years). Thats a 51% income for them. (1% profit) which adds up to a lot. Now if everyone was smart, and quit while they were ahead, the casinos would be bankrupt. But since people want the "big score"...they continue to play, which is what the casino wants, and probably end up down.

I have no idea but I still find myself at card tables :). I think the thing is that odds matter but both in a positive and negative way. I mean its obvious that you have no shot at winning the lottery but what about the one person that won last week. They have the same odds as you do and they won. So the odds are very slim but at the same time the odds of the winner is 100%.

Because even if they lose, they still know there's a CHANCE to win (even though it's really slim). The chance is exciting to them.
It's like when you train a dog to sit. When it actually does sit, you only reward it sometimes. So when you tell it to sit, it's hoping that THIS will be the time you reward it with tons of treats.

gambling is an addictive habit just as bad as smoking or doing drugs some believe they are truly lucky so to speak and others enjoy the rush of winning to the point that it is a rush for them for example a car thief or a child shoplifting its just for the adrenaline at that point

They know that there is a chance that they could win. People love to tempt fate. That's why ppl touch things that say "Don't Touch", push buttons that they aren't supposed to, drive faster than they should. It' s a thrill, a rush to do something to tempt chance. That's my dumb opinion anyways.

Everyday, we gamble. Everyone.
the only difference is, with the lottery, they tell you your odds.

Because reinforcement on a random ratio or random time schedule is most powerful. In addition, "mystery motivators" are most powerful.
