I heard there are metal bar codes or chips in the back page of a passport where customs can scan it to ensure its authenticity....how can I find out if there is a chip in there?,,,

Yes, your U.S. Passport probably contains the new electronic chip. "On December 30, 2005, the United States began to issue Electronic Passports. It is anticipated that all new full validity U.S. passports will be issued as electronic passports by the end of 2006."

It depends on when you applied for your passport. If it was just recently, then yes there is the chip installed in your passport. You can always check the offical website to see if the date you applied for your passport is after the new process of adding the chips.
