Why do Hispanics get offended when they're referred to as "Mexicans"? Like they refuse to be called Mexican. Even if they ARE from Mexico.

IF anything, shouldn't it be the other way around, since Mexico was once invaded by the Spanish? Why would they now want to be called "Spanish" or "Hispanic" instead?

I know because I've dealt with a lot "hispanic" customers and they all tell me that they are Hispanic and NOT "Mexican." That's why I'm wondering.

Well, I don't know why a Mexican would be offended by being called a Mexican (unless it was said in an inappropriate tone.) However, being Hispanic myself, and having visited northern states (i live in Florida) quite a couple of times, I can say that when most think of the word Hispanic, they think Mexican, and that is extremely wrong. Colombians, Venezuelans, Bolivians, Spaniards, Argentinians, Peruvians, Chileans, Uruguayans, Paraguayans, Cubans, Puerto Ricans, Dominicans, Panamanians, Nicaraguans, Hondurans (I'm not sure if that's what they're called) are all Hispanic, and yet the cultures from each individual country (although sharing some, if any, similarities other than the language) are different.
So if you were to say I am Hispanic, that is fine, but don't try to group me in with someone from Mexico (I am from Argentina) because that would be like trying to group someone from Canada with a Brit, or a South African, simply because of the common language.

I don't know why anyone who is from Mexico would be offended by being called Mexican. Hispanics may get offended at people thinking that EVERYONE who is Hispanic is Mexican, because not all Hispanics are Mexicans. Hispanics come from all over the place. The term Hispanic is generally used to describe someone whose last name is of Spanish origin and/or whose heritage is from one of the Spanish colonies - more specifically from countries in Latin America. What I have noticed is that a number of people from Latin America want to claim more Spanish origin than Indian. And there are still many people who are on the "soy puro espanol" kick, because for some reason they think it is shameful to be Indian...not something I entirely understand since it was the Spaniards who raped and pillaged many countries in the Americas. (So they'd rather be the descendents of rapists???? Well...OK) Mind you, this of course does NOT imply that most Hispanics think like this. It's just that there are people in these other countries who prefer to be "white" than to acknowledge any Indian or mixed heritage. And also many people from the various countries want to claim that their countries' particular dialect of Spanish is "Castellano" or "the purest form".

Personally, I don't know any Mexicans who are offended by being called Mexican. I do know some Mexicans who were born in the US who prefer to be called Latino.
