Stephen Hawking asked this question on Yahoo Answers, and I wanted to get some more perspective, with my twist: Can we really survive for the next 100 years considering all the irraversible damage we do to our planet? What about with regards to war? Are we capable of surviving considering the possibilities of nuclear war? And finally if you think we can survive, what fundamental changes will it take in our species to outlive these circumstances? (Please hold all religious answers).

the way i see it. yes we can survive. i got a couple reasons.
#1. we are very adaptive. if its cold out we grow hair, if its over populated we dont grow as big, if the polar ice caps melt we build boats or grow gills,

#2. in 50 years we have made dramatic steps in technology. sure its been pretty damn dirty, but steps non the less. how will be in another 50 years. no one knows.

As far as planetary damage is concerned, you don't have to worry to much about any irreversible harm done since the planet will purify and cleanse itself after a certain period of time because the planet is designed to do that and can shake us off like a bad case of fleas if it felt like it. That's why when people speak of saving the planet, their arrogance is really talking about saving their own skins since the world needs no saving, except if we could get rid of all the damned plastic since it won't bio- degrade. With the possibility of nuclear war, I can almost envision a nightmarish struggle to survive with all the contamination and destruction all around us, if survival is even possible.

i think the chances are slim that a good % of people could survive a world war with nukes... i don't put much stock in us surviving past that, or at least w/o considerable pain. we'd be way behind on medical tech. are we capable of surving? possibly. we would just have to change our lifestyles and rearrange cities, etc to accomodate all the devastation. let's just hope we can made great medical advances before everyone decides they hate each so much that they'd really mess up the world.

If the president keeps playing war games then no we will not survive unless we leave earth and find another planet to live on.

I believe that we can only really survive if you reverse the damage we have done. It is not easy nor will it be a breeze, but it is not impossible. To do that we really need to come together as a planet and put our differences and values aside...only then can nature forgive us and we can survive...

Unless there is a nuclear war we will definitely be here for a long time to come. There are too many changes we would have to make to keep from destroying ourselves.

I can tell you, no matter the circumstances, we will never survive as a species on this planet.

This is a prime example of humans having to much time on their hands. The World War II generation didn't have time to think of stuff like this and they had it much harder.
