It has been said by his teammates that Materazzi called him a racial slur or something according to his race.

Materazzi pointed out that only his goal was the legitimate one, since Zid got it via a penalty kick after the ref made a bad call.
Clearly Zid's reaction added to France's already bad reputation.
An unfortunate way to end a career, huh.
