Well, you could have power, to do something, to for example 'Make Dinner' but if mom and dad didn't give you the authority to 'make dinner' then you're probably going to get in trouble. If you don't have the authority to do what you wish to with your power, then you do it all in vain.

Authority is thrust upon you, by getting a certain job, becoming a parent etc. It comes with the territory. Power is something you achieve ( or not).People in authority do not always have the power to enforce their decisions. Example: A policeman has authority but he doesn't have a whole lot of power, he merely has the authority to enforce the law.

People with money have power, but not necessarily authority. People in jobs such as government officials, high ranking military such as Generals or Seargent Major of the Army , police officers, politicians, etc have authority which in turn, IS power.
Power=can change things
Authority=can order people around
oh, but police officers only have authority over what is considered the law

The difference, in my opinion is that authority is given whereas power is gained, either through adversity or through mailcious means. Having power usually means you consider yourself above everything (morality, law, etc.) whereas having authority (i guess) means you are responsible for any consequences of your actions or directions. That's all Ican think of right now.

Power is just the ability to do something inspite of all opposition.
Authority is the implementation of the same.
Hope this helps.
Good luck.
