It always amazes me how Americans are so anti-communism despite having no understanding of what it is. Communism is an economic system in which the means of production are under public, rather than private, control. Communism in practice has often been coupled with dictatorial political systems (i.e. in Russia and China for example) and it is these dictatorships which Americans correctly despise. However, communism could, in theory, also be married to a democratic system of government. In many European nations communist parties run in democratic elections and have even participated in ruling coalitions, without any hint of dictatorship. Capitalism, the American economic system in which the means of production are in private hands, can also be married to either a democratic system of government or to a dictatorial system. In America is has been married to a nominally democratic system which has functioned well at least until the 2000 election when the will of the voters was overturned by: a) an antiquated system of electoral college votes designed to offset the influence of the common people who were not trusted by the framers of the constitution to have the wisdom to select their own leaders and: b) deliberate fraud by the Republican Party and their supporters. In many smaller countries capitalism has been married to military dictatorships, often with the support of the American government. "Liberal" is a term with a flexible meaning, but generally refers to less conservative political forces within a capitalist democracy. It would be hard to identify a "liberal" in American politics today as even the most "left-wing" Democrats are pretty conservative.

I think Rory McRandall had a great answer. He gave insight into the larger significance of the question, not just dictionary definitions.
There is a great website that can tell you where your beliefs sit on the economic left-right continuum as well as the social authoritarian-libertarian continuum. Then it compares you to famous world leaders throughout history.
"Despite popular perceptions, the opposite of fascism is not communism but anarchism (ie liberal socialism), and that the opposite of communism ( i.e. an entirely state-planned economy) is neo-liberalism (i.e. extreme deregulated economy)"

Mike, there is as much difference between a liberal and a communist as there is between you and a pedophile. Unless you are a pedophile, of course, but I'm assuming you aren't.

Not a lot of difference sadly. Both want the government to be our mommys and daddies. Makes me sick.
We need goverment to some extent. But they don't need to tell us if we can smoke in a bar, or tell us what type of fireworks we should be able to shoot off.

communists are liberals who have balls.
Well, that's the short version. Being "liberal" these days means "political centrist" as opposed to "political left"
