Because there will always be someone who wants to be a step infront of everyone.
Power and greed.

Your question is very vague and idealistic. I'm not sure exactly what you're asking.
To achieve peace, say, on a global level, there would have to be a population of level-headed, well-raised individuals (most despots have been abused as children, or possibly mentally unstable). Today, there are still such people out there. Thus, in order to have peace, it must start at the family and individual level. Since it is not possible to monitor everyone's upbringing and enforce such regulations, megalomaniacs, terrorists, tyrants, and generally really annoying people can spring forth from society to snatch up its reins and control it.
Prosperity implies that it is possible to attain an equal, high standard of living for everyone in the world. It is not. The earth does not have those kinds of resources. In America, most lower-class people have a better standard of living than, say, people in the poorer African nations. Prosperity for all would imply an upper-class style of living for all; it's not even possible in America.
On the other hand, the distribution of funds and goods amongst people would be communism--which isn't necessarily bad; it's just proven not to work. It's a great ideal, but apparently, not possible. The full distribution of resources would take up... resources anyway, so it's not plausible.
As long as there are stupid people and limited resources, and considering the current state of the world (because it's so full of stupid people and limited resources), your utopian vision is ultimately just that--a vision.
As for the ignorance, without ignorance, what is there? Who is ignorant? I think everyone's a little ignorant. Some people are ignorant of others' beliefs; some people are ignorant of how another group of people lives; some people just don't understand how a toaster works. So uh, ignorance is... it's impossible to eliminate; imposing your own method of utopian living would be ignorant of another's own utopian vision. Someone else's utopia may be that of slavery and oppression with that person at the reins of society.

Because we are human, we swim in our own ignorance to many things in the world. We are by nature a aggessive creature who feed on others ignorance only to advance ourselves in our own personal quest for happiness or prosperity. I'm not saying everyone out there is like that. but the people who make all the decisions that control our lives such as government, army , and even some civilians like lawyers, scientist, and so many others are not willing to have the life we seek. The one that can and ony will exist in our hearts, minds, and in the end with God. I know its a wonderful thing you seek the answer to, but i'm afraid it is not to be found in this world.

As strange as this is going to sound to you I will tell you why. The one's that do not want to come together are not completly convinced that it is ignorance. They do not think in a human being mindset they think upper, middle and lower class people. They apply these to different cultures and races. The thing that makes them different is that they believe the things they believe are right not ignorant. We could all come together if we could drop the petty crap of black, hispanic, and other racial barriers. In addition we would have to drop all the gender differences and work together. What do you think the chances of that happening are. Just read questions in answers as they reek of gender bias even as high up as our courts.. Reverse gender bias is the work of the gender that seeks control. Control is not really what they want it is to enslave the other gender into subserviance and servitude based on their concept that they are equals. Women can never be equal because they are women and men are men. Until we reach that plateau the same thing blocks the human being attitude. Then we have the separation of religion each believing that his/her religion is the only way and when that attitude is prevelant there is again those that think they are better by classification than others. What you ask is possible but I do not think that ignorance is the only thing keeping it from being. It is the freedom to think and believe the way you want and I for one am not willing to give up that freedom. If we act as human beings to come together in peace and prosperity, what would be the common bonds and belief structure of the society? Are you willing to let someone tell you or will you be willing to let someone else lead the way without question? What if they are wrong and we all die. Is the destruction of an entire world of people because they followed one that thought he/she had the wisdom of what is, what was and what is to come. When our President stands up in the name of our country and makes a statement like, "BRING IT ON!", I have to say no, I will not follow teaching when one of our leaders on National Television says one of the stupidest things in history to another country. Open your eyes man at what you are asking and weight the consequesnces and ask yourself if that is really what you want or do you just ask because you heard it from someone else and it sounded cool. In a society like you propose you will follow the leader and if you look at Iraq, the one you follow will kill you himself. Be yourself and live with your convictions but if you want to change things think about all the things that it entails and do not be like our president and stand out saying something stupid but change it from your level in life and start with the people around you. There is no magic that will do what you ask but if you are dedicated to your endeavor start at home and work out. If it is good for everyone and makes sense and people believe in you then you will have to lead and that puts their well being in your hands for what you profess. Are you willing and intelligent enough to stand up and take that responsibility? If not then why don't you try asking questions that will make you smarter, not look stupid.

Because we can't seem to think of each other as equals. As far into history, civilization has not been able to come together until the brink of disaster. It's the sad truth.

hmmmm.....if two people are willing to come together, meet and become vulnerable to one another (meaning no ulterior motives, interests or agenda) then that's the time that peace will exist. To quote John Lennon..."I hope someday you can join us...and the world will live as one..."

Because every of us have our own interest and ambition. We always want to have more than others and never feel enough. Even when we have more than others we still want to have others belonging (greed). But if we can overcome this one, we can live in peace.
