In Hebrew there was no "v" sound at the time of David. David's name started and ended with a "d" sound. So his name contained two consonant sounds and two vowel sounds.

The Hebrew character for the "d" sound is named "daleth," and comes from the Hebrew word "daleth" which is the word for "door."

The shape of the character for daleth is now different than it was at the time of David. At that time it was a triangle because, at the time the language developed, a door was the shape of a tent flap open on a tent; i.e., a door was a triangular shape.

So using the triangle shaped "D" David's name would be spelled DD when written quickly, and would be filled in with vowel markings when spelled formally.

Legend says that he superimposed the the two triangular letters on his war shield. He could be immediately located in battle by the "star" shape of the two letters on his shield, which became known as a "shield of David" or a "star of David."

This according to my old Hebrew teacher, Naphtali.
