We have been talking about engagement the past year, but more so the past few months. He is away right now working at a summer camp for a few more weeks. He's coming home tomorrow for a break and earlier before he got off the phone I said "wait, I want to tell you how much I love/miss you". Then he asked about the ring.
Do guys say things like this just to make the other feel better? I don't want to get excited over nothing, esp since last summer he "accidentally" proposed to me and said I took it the wrong way.

I wouldn't think he was just joking. But he does remind of Mr. Sheffield from The Nanny, saying something and then taking it back. Good luck with that.

if he keeps asking about the ring, be honest...tell him what you like...Gold, silver, platinum, single diamond, something simple, a certain cut, this way he has some idea what you would like. Then tell him that you would like him to surprise you based on the ideas you've given him. Don't make it easy for him, if he's serious he'll do it, if he's not than maybe that's why he keeps asking about it, maybe he wants to be sure you want to marry him. absenth makes the heart grow fonder, perhaps its the real deal this time, try and not get your hopes up too much but the only way to know is how he acts when he comes home. Its really nice of him to consider your opionion on the whole thing i mean its going to be on your hand for the rest of your life, so cool beans for you that he's letting you help pick it out, best wishes.

If he said that just to get you to feel better then he is a dirty sob.
Just tell lets go shopping and after a couple stops in the mall go in and see if he wants to pick out rings.

How do you "accidentally" propose? If he goes back & you don't have a ring you'll know he's not serious again. Actions speak louder than words everytime.

I know I would never joke about getting a ring unless I was serious but I guess you never know. Like someone else said you know him better than we do. What does your instincts say?
