Preliminary computer check says it's an emission problem. Any ideas before I take it to the dealer on Tuesday? Thanks. Kirk D

All depends on what make and model car you have.

Cars like GM products use engine light as a dummy light for simple things as an O2 sensor, gas cap leak, spark plug miss fire.

Where Honda's have been known to have an engine light come on if the oil trip meter isnt' reset after 3 normal oil change intervals. Warning the driver that damage might be occuring.

Best bet is to check your owners manaul or wait for the dealership.

If you're driving a Chevy, to reset any sensor light you have to turn your key to the on position and press down the gas pedal 3 times in 5 seconds to reset the system. If you don't own a Chevy, then check the owners manual under sensor indicators to find out how to reset the system.
You need to know how to do this anyway, because you have to reset the Change Oil light comes on too.

Also, in re changing the tank cap, did you get a factory authorized cap? Newer Chevys only work with what came from the factory or an equivalent replacement. If you bought a locking gas cap and replaced the factory cap with that, it will also make the engine light come on (happened to me).

If none of these cover the problem, then you may have a problem with the catalytic converter (also happened to me). If your car is under warranty, this should be a covered warranty repair.

Try putting the cap on again. If the light's still on- disconnect the positive battery cable for about 15 seconds so the computer can re-boot it's brain. If that fails, just drive it for a day or so if there's no noticeable difference in how your car runs. Sometimes I think car makers want us to think there's a problem when there really isn't. Hope this helps.
