The state of Israel was legally created out of the dismemberment of the Ottoman Empire at the end of World War I. The area was desolate, desert and swamp, with some small towns and a few inhabitants, many of them nomads. The inhabitants considered themselves mostly Syrian. The Balfour Declaration issued by the British, who were given the mandate over the area by the League of Nations. Jews have lived in the country since Biblical times. The Arabs from the surrounding areas were lured to "Palestine" by the industry and prosperity that the Jews brought to the region. Envy, hatred and religious fanaticism turned the Arabs against the Jews. In 1947, under pressure, the British resigned their mandate. The same year, the United Nations mandated partioning of the territory. The Jews, though disappointed, accepted the partition. The Arabs rejected it and launched war against Israel. The armies of five Arab countries invaded. Following the exhortations of the invaders, the Arab residents got out of the way hoping to return after victory was attained. They could then reclaim their property and that of the Jews, all of whom would have been killed or would have fled. Israel won. That and that alone is the source of the Palastinian "refugees". Had the Arabs accepted the UN partition plan, there would now have been a state of "Palestine" for the last 58 years. The might have attained a similar level of prosperity, advancement and development as Israel. 50% of Israel's population now includes refugees from Morocco, Algeria, Iraq and Yemen. All were accepted by Israel with open arms and have become successful members of their society. The Palestinians refused to integrate these refugees into their population and instead confined them to "refugee camps". The ones there are now fourth generation and through no fault of Israel.
I thought I'd shed some light on the history of the region.

Honestly, I know the Palestinians have legitimate grievances, but they will never be able to militarily overpower Israel, so why do they keep up these piddling little attacks that draw a lethal response? All they have to do is stop attacking Israel and Israel will stop attacking them. It's not like Israel is the agressor here. Yes, Israel makes mistakes and kills civilians, but those are mistakes made while aiming at military targets. The Palestinians too often target civilians or just fire at random and don't care who they hit. This is the difference between the two sides. The fighting is accomplishing nothing, and the Palestinians need to get their own house in order, stop the attacks, impose some order in the territory they already control, and then work politically to see what other concessions they can gain.
To MC Hummer: Yes, I think Israel would stop attacking the Palestinians if the Palestinians stopped attacking them, because based on their policy of disengagement and the wall they are building, it's pretty obvious that Israel wants nothing more to do with the Palestinians. No, they won't give back all the territory the Palestinians claim (which is the entire country) but they have already withdrawn from Gaza and would withdraw from most of the West Bank if the Palestinians didn't treat every concession as a sign of weakness and a new opportunity to attack. A noted diplomat, I forget who, said the Palestinians never miss an opportunity to miss an opportunity. In the 90s the Palestinians were offered complete control of ninety-some percent of the occupied territory and they turned it down flat. You can throw in quotes from the last fifty years showing that Israel has supported getting rid of all Palestinians. Well, how often do Palestinians talk about driving Israelis into the sea? And I don't mean thirty years ago, I mean yesterday. And lets accept for a moment your argument that all Israelis serve in the army, so all are targets. Does that mean it's okay to blow them up when they are off duty relaxing with their families? How many wars of the past can you name where off duty soldiers away from the front lines were deliberately targeted, along with their wives and children. You say the children will grow up to be soldiers - well that could be said of any child in any nation, but armies don't go around executing future soldiers out of hand. That's a war crime.

Maybe the Palestinians shouldn't have been firing rockets into Israeli villiages, and maybe they shouldn't have kidnapped an Israeli soldier.
Also, the Palestinian army (terrorists) are being targeted, not civilians. Unlike Palestine, Israel seeks only to defend itself. Just because Palestine is weaker than Israel, that doesn't mean Palestine isn't the aggressor.
If you look at history, Israel has ceased firing and given land and sovereignty back to the Palestinian people many, many times. Israel could conquer all of their neighbors without US support, but they do not, because they just want to be left alone. Palestine wants to expand Muslim territory and force the Christians and the Jews out of Israel. That's why they don't recognize Israel as a legitimate state to begin with.

Palestine was given a state and they elected a leader. Even more land in Gaza was given to them by the Israelis. Was that enough? Of course not. These terrorists will not be happy until the Israelis are driven off their land which they have every right to defend. If the terrorists in Palestine stop killing innocent civilians, stop using missiles, stop the suicide bombers and live peacefully within their borders, the fighting will end. In the meantime, Go, Israel, Go!! They are doing what we should be doing to terrorists.

I am by far not a supporter of the Hamas political group - but I feel sympathetic for the Palestinian citizens - Palestine has many grievances and was greatly taken advantage of by the United Nations after World War I - but that crisis between them and Israel is atrocious - too many have died - and both sides have committed wrong actions

You know what the Nazis did in Denmark whenever one of their soldiers was killed by the resistance? The Nazis would grab ten Danish civilians at random and publicly execute them.
Because of this and other mass murders of non-combatants by the Nazis, "collective punishment" was deemed a *war crime* under the Nuremburg charter.
Why the Nuremburg rules for war crimes are not enforced against Israel, I would like to know. The Israeli terrorists are doing the exact same things that the Nazis once did.
To "vu_crusader2002":
Do you honestly believe the Israelis would cease their violence if the Palestinians laid down their arms?
Israeli policy is the ethnic cleansing of Palestinians from their homeland. The Israelis don't want some or most of the land the want it *all*, the Palestinians completely removed from their homeland.

And people say Israel wants peace and sharing of the land? Only if they are more deluded than George Bush.
Why do the Palestinians attack? Because their silent suffering would be ignored by the media and the world while the Israeli terrorists drove the Palestinians off their land.
And finally for anyone who idiotically claims that Israeli terrorism against Palestinian civilians (those *not* involved in the fighting) is justified, think on this: By Israeli law, all jews are required to perform military service and remain in the reserves *for life*. That means after age 18, there is no such thing as an "Israeli civilian"; by your "logic" about the Palestinians, there is a stronger argument to suggest that ALL Israeli adults are valid military targets, men AND women. Every Israeli adult is a soldier, ergo a valid target for Hamas.
Of course, if you disagree, then tell Israel to stop its terrorist attacks against those not belonging to the PLO or Hamas.

Why would anyone agree with this? There is an easy way to stop this IDF incursion and combat action of "Operation Summer Rain"
Release Corporal Gilead Shalit. NOW!
No, he is not a "p.o.w." -- he is a kidnapped hostage being offered back to Israel by terms of blackmail & he was captured by a non-uniform wearing gang ("Islamic Army" is a terrorist group) & he has not been allowed visit by the Red Crystal ICRC, despite being wounded in a surprise attack while his fellow soldiers were killed.
Those are the facts.

I can't say I "agree" with what's happening in Palestine. However Hamas kidnapped the soldier and fired the missiles into Israel. If Hamas can't stomach war, maybe they should try peace. If someone fired missiles into my country and then came into my country to kidnap a soldier, I would expect retaliation in kind. Actually Israel is showing a lot of restraint IMO. What goes around, comes around.

Yes. Hamas is behind the kidnapping and Hamas is the Palesinian government now. The people elected them knowing full well what they would do, and Israel knows too.
I hope the Israelis will continue attacking palestine until they release the soldier. No deals, no negotiation. Just a steady bombardament until they break.
