I do not think Roger will do it next year. This is why:

Roger, yes, has an edge on the fast hard courts at the US Open and on the grass courts of Wimbledon. However, those only account for two of the four majors he would need to get the grand slam.

Nadal, if he had not been absent due to injury would must certainly have defeated Roger this year at the Australian Open. It is a slower court with an extremely high bounce. Because of the nature of Nadal's game, the extreme top spin that he puts on the ball, it would be extremely hard to defeat him there. In addition, we know Rafael has the goods to defeat Federer on a slower court--he has done it four times this year! 6 times total(almost 7--the one loss on a slower court was at Miami in the fifth after Nadal had a chance to serve it out).

Moving on to clay. Yes, Roger is easily the second best clay courter. And while Roger is improving on clay, so is Nadal. Nadal, in learning to play on other surfaces, will also add new dimensions to his already phenomenol clay court game. This will make it even more difficult for Federer to win the French. Yes, Roger has the game, but the question is, does he have the guts to execute it against Nadal? No. Time and time again Federer had choked playing Nadal. Everyone says each time that Federer "has now figured out Nadal's game." But then, Federer loses again. Look to Mat Wilander's commentary on their mental toughness differential. It's quite colorful and telling.

IN SUMMARY--the career grand slam will happen if Nadal gets hurt next year. The calendar year grand slam will not happen for Roger. There will always be a Nadal, a Safin, a Baghdatis, to stop him.
Nadal could get it, though not next year. However, if he did it about three years from now it would be no shock. In a few years, his game should have matured on the grass and the summer hard courts.
So, no, no grand slam will be completed next year.

I don't know if we will see it (even four consecutive majors a la Tiger, in golf)...

I tend to think that Nadal has about the same chance to pull it off one day as Federer. If both are healthy, you would have to favor Nadal somewhat on clay (French) and Federer a little on grass (Wimbledon)...They would be about even money at both the Australian and the US Opens...

...And then, there are 126 other players in each of the four Majors, and some great players, like Hewitt, Bagdhatis, Nalbandian, Lubicic, Ancic, etc., who can win on a given day...

All this should make you appreciate the greatness of Rod Laver who won the Grand Slam twice, in (I believe) both 1962 and 1969...Amazing! And, if there wasn't the split between amateur and professional, he probably would have easily won another twelve majors in those 6 years in between!

Hard to say. It will be an amazing accomplishment. Federer, with his all-court game, certainly seems to have the best shot. That said, the French Open is always going to be tough for him. Whilst he's usually the favorite on grass and hard-courts, on clay, he's merely one of a number of players who could win. There are so many clay specialists on the tour and he still looks a little awkward on the surface, so he'd need a little luck. Certainly, if he is to achieve the Grand Slam, he'll need to do it soon, as fitness is vital.
