Answer questions with questions and just release scant details of where you have been without elaborating even when people persistently ask you (annoys the hell out of me though)....
Go do some interesting things: visit unfamilar places that are off the beaten path (Azerbaijan for example) and let people know about it.....should do the trick

It may sound self-contradictory, but in order to appear quixotic and mysterious, you must give up all desire to be so. Then you must proceed to pursue your own interests regardless of what others think of you. Do not do things just because you think they might appear mysterious to others. Live your life on your own terms; do whatever strikes your fancy; the only rule you must obey is "Do No Harm"; don't pay the slightest bit of attention to what others think of you.
Then you, like me, will appear to be mysterious and interesting to others. But I simply don't care what others think of my life, as long as I do them no harm!

lead an interesting life full of mystery. Then you will appear mysterious and interesting even from close-up.

Wear a dark trenchcoat, dark sunglasses, carry a briefcase, and never say a word (and if you must speak, whisper- preferrably into an electronic device)- LOL!

dont tell everything. say something that makes them think. dont be straight foreward. say things in riddles or something that gets thier minds moving
