"Mon stromboli goûte mieux que votre croissant"
(My stromboli tastes better than your croissant), said Materazzi to Zidane, referring to the meals they had before the match...

But in a serious note, according to Wikipedia:
...After a brief lip reading done by experts on replays of the incident it became evident that Materazzi provoked Zidane by calling him a "terrorist".

There are several versions:

One is an insult to zidane's mother which Materazzi has denied.
The other is the same insult combined with the word "terrorist"
There are other reports that say that Materazzi pulled Zidane's shirt causing Zidane to remark "If you want my shirt, I'll take it off after the game" (or something to that effect) to which Materazzi responded "I'd rather take the shirt off your wife" which inflamed Zidane.

If the last was the case, I fully endorse Zidane's actions for there should be some things that are worth more than football and glory and your spouse should be one of them.

I don't know what Materazzi said. However, I think this last match is going to be a notorious one. Fifa and all who involved should be responsible and try to take actions in stopping any possible verbal harm to players. Otherwise, The World Cup will be only a battlefield. Most football fans will certainly want to see a fair game, not a war among all nations. Verbal harm is more harmful and disgraceful than physical harm as it destroys the spirit and the essence of the World Cup.

When HUMILITY becomes a virtue in this world, distortion will no longer succeed as a tactic to achieve GLORY.

The WORLD CUP: A SYMBOL for UNITY and PEACE
has always been marred by cunning PERFORMANCES of innocence.

My words to Marco Materazzi: (and all the others who follow in his footsteps)

Sempre sei stato Furbo, Materazzi, Sei Furbo!
You have always been cunning, Materazzi, You are cunning!

...and every one loves you. You've reached great lengths, and respect, keep up the good work, no one will ever notice it, or at least CARE TO DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT. Because you make people money and happy.

I'd like to know too, but no matter what Materazzi said, Zidane deserves no sympathy for his actions. With millions upon millions of eyes fixed on what is supposed to be the pinnacle of footballing excellence, "Zizou" brought disgrace to the game; not to mention his team, his nation and himself. What away to end your international footballing career - being red-carded for a moment of lunacy. For any player to do what he did, it can not be tolerated. For the captain of a national team to do it, it is completely unacceptable. But for the great Zinedine Zizou Zidane to do it, it beggars belief.

i dont think zidane's red card costed the match
coz the french kept on attacking and the italian kept on defending hoping to get to the penalty shoootout
that s what they wanted all since when they equalized
but anyways, reason why he head butted him, materazzi accused him of being terorist
if u think that's bad, accusing, think of yrselves accusing us "arabs" as terorists all the time

In my opinion this isn't important, because I think "Materazzi" tried to mad "Zidan" and he succeeded.
While "Zidan" was angry and did that act, French lost its best player and of course best penalty shooter.
I think "Italian" were more professional than "French". It was a war of nerves...!

The argument was over Bud Light. Materazzi: "taste great". Zindane: "less filling". and the rest is history...

Probably something really insulting. Otherwise Zidane wouldn't have been so drastic.
