for what ever reason some politicians still believe ferrets are exotic wild animal but yet any movie or pop star can own a chimp or lion for the right kind of money. the main problem is they get confused with natural wild (ferral) ferrets found in western states domesticated and ferral ferrets are two totally different things. ferral ferrets are and have always been born in the wild. domesticated ferrets asuming you have bought from a reputable breeder have been whelped domestically and has for generations. most of the predator instincts like the ability to kill prairrie dogs eat them and steal there burrows have been lost with the domestication. so the whole theory of releasing a ferret into the wild and it becoming feral therefore bringing discease and ruining agriculture is false. the ferret once domesticated will not know how to hunt or take care of itself in the wild and will die in 2 days to a week. ferrets are great animals cute and very playful and also have to be taught at a early age not to bite agressively, some play bite is okay but some will bring it to an extreme which will cause more agressive biting problems in the future. once given the chance i believe ferrets are one of the better pets highly active for 3-5 hours then will sleep for 12 hours getting your pet started is pretty expense and should be thought out before hand things like cage(s) travel cage toys food snacks lots of ferret litter and the parts needed to ferret (baby) proof your house i hope this has help educated you about ferrets

There are vaccine issues. Vets can't decide what vaccines are necessary for ferrets, or if the current vaccines are completely effective. Rabies is the biggest issue.
Sometimes people release their pets into the wild and folks are afraid that there will be feral ferret colonies like there are for cats. The difference being, ferrets are more distructive and will damage ecosystems, not to mention, wreck property.
Those are a few of the issues. Gotta admit there might be a good point about the ferals. People can be so stupid.
I saw a bumper sticker that said it best: "Legalize Ferrets, Outlaw Politicians."

Here's one article that explains it. It's a really stupid law and Gov. Schwarzenegger just put the bill on the back burner again a year or so ago:
http://www.keepingferrets.com/WhyFerretsAreIllegalInCalifornia.php
Read what happened to this California woman:
http://www.contracostatimes.com/mld/cctimes/community/14946958.htm
And this site has what you need if you want to support Californian ferret owners and bill AB 647:
http://www.cdfa.org/
This last site even tells people which travel routes to avoid in order to not get detected by checkpoints. Checkpoints? This is ridiculous, isn't it?
Keep in mind that ferrets are domesticated and can hardly survive out on their own, because of a lack of survival skills. Ferrets also do not handle heat very well, and depending on where you are in Cali, it gets pretty toasty.
There are too many predators out there as well, and then there is humans their pets and cars. On top of that, the majority of ferrets are spayed or neutered, so how on Earth are they going to start a colony?? So, unless you have a ferret with super skills that is unaltered running around in a perfectly safe area and it just happens to bump into another ferret that hasn't been fixed, I think it's safe to say that the risk of them taking over California by storm is a negligible risk at best.

I know of ferrets being illegal only in California. I don't know about other places though. I think that California has a protected prairie dog population and they're afraid that people will turn they're pet ferrets loose and they will decimate them. Prairie dogs are the ferrets primary prey in the wild.

i have a ferret. I have taken him to the vet for his vaccinations and check-ups. His is the very best pet. He is fun to play with, he is cuddly and lovable. The whole family loves him. I can't imagine why they would be illegal, but i know they are in California.
