Kimihiro Watanuki is a young boy with a cursed gift. He has the ability to see evil spirits, and somehow they seem attracted to himself. One day he meets a misterious woman who names herself Yuuko. She claims to have the means to end his torment, but she never works for free, and she wouldn't help him until he works for her enough to pay for her services. Thus he starts to work in her shop and discovers that in that place, nothing is what it seems.

Zedd is a 15-year-old boy who lives in Calm. He is frustrated by daily life, and he's seeking for the place to try his possibilities.

One day, a mysterious wind invites him to a time-space crevasse. He dives into the crevasse seeking for the answer that might be there.

Where he lands is another world. There, "Shadow Casters" have been fighting against each other endlessly using “Shadow”, which is a crystal of magical power. With the power of Shadow, the Shadow Caster uses magic and monsters called "Split".

Fascinated by the power, Zedd wants to be a Shadow Caster. However, he doesn't know that a big Spirit, "Amil Gaul", lies in his body, and that its power is so large as to influence the future of this world.

Two rival kingdoms vie for fresh water and in the process end up destroying their entire society. As seen through the eyes of an innocent go-between, this tragic story details the depths to which loyalty and everlasting love must be tested, in a futile attempt to save a world from total destruction.

Those are unlicesensed series that should get some credit.
Here are some that are on DVD

Gunslinger Girl (My personal favorite.)
"Henrietta" was an innocent little girl when her entire family was massacred and she was left for dead. She was rescued by a privately-owned social welfare organization and given cybernetic components over her battered body. Brainwashed by the organization, she and four other girls now work as cold-blooded assassins, doing the dirty work for the Italian government

Haunted Junction
Saito High is a high school with its spiritual beings and a principal whose hobby is collecting occult paraphernalia. The school has the prophecy-chosen members of the Holy Student Council to protect it. These students have problems of their own; Haruto Houjo, the president, has a way of summoning spirits, and would resign from his duty for a normal life if it weren't for the principal. Kazumi Ryodo, the next member, is good at being possessed and has something for the Hanako. The last member is Mutsuki Asahina, who is a master of exorcism and is attracted to small boys. Unfortunately, these three are in charge of keeping the school in line and defending the world from supernatural beings, and this mission brings them through wacky predicaments.

Kyo Kara Maou
Yuri Shibuya was living a pretty normal life. That changed the day he was dunked into a toilet after an attempt to save a classmate from a gang of bullies. Instead of just getting a good soaking, he's pulled in. The next thing he knows, he's in a world that vaguely resembles medieval Europe. If that's not odd enough, he's told that he is to be the next Maoh, just because he has black hair and black eyes. The Maoh is the King of the Mazoku, who are coexisting not-so-peacefully with the humans in this world. Much to his subject's dismay, he's totally different from the rulers they're accustomed to. He's kind, considerate, a believer in justice, and not willing to use violence to solve conflicts. Not exactly someone they want running a country on the very brink of war. Now, Yuri has to deal with trying to become a good Maoh, while at the same time attempting to adapt to this land's customs and culture, all in a world where the tension between the humans and Mazoku is reaching its peak.

These are just a few that need credit, though there are a ton.

I can't believe no one has mentioned Love Hina, Sakura Diaries, Sakura Wars, Chobits, Clover, or Wolf's Rain.

If you want action-oriented animes with female leads: Blue Seed, Witch Hunter Robin, Bubblegum Crisis, Bubblegum Crisis-Tokyo 2040, Geneshaft, Eureka Seven and Jubei-Chan: Secret of the Lovely Eyepatch.

Here's a few more I think you'll like...
Mahou Sensei Negima
Yumeria
Tenchi Muyo
SaiKano
Read Or Die
Onegai Twins!
Scrapped Princess
Outlaw Star
.Hack, Legends
Bottle Fairys
Kare Kano
And if you haven't seen the movies "Spirited Away" and "Grave of the Fireflies", give them a look also.
If you want more action, try Bakuretsu Tenshi, Speed Grapher or Elfen Lied (the last 2 aren't for young kids).
Enjoy!

Full Moon wo Sagashite
Chance Pop Session/Triangle Pop Session
Tiny Snow Fairy Sugar
The Twelve Kingdoms (not much like the others, but good)

If you only have to check out one, check out Full Moon wo Sagashite. Based on the three you just listed, I really think you'll like it. It was recently licensed so there's only one DVD out so far, but a little patience goes a long way and the first episode lays the story and characters out well enough to tell you whether or not you'll like it.

I am absolutely obsessed with Fullmetal Alchemist. Some good movie animes that everyone seems to love are "Spirited Away" "Princess Mononoke" and "Howls Moving Castle" (all by the same director). Awesome movies, and awesome show. But there are soooo many awesome animes out there that I'm sure you could easily find something that would interest both of you!
