From the time a Tsunami is detected to the time it hits the shore is about 20 miuntes- assuming that everyone has gotten the notice they're gonna try to outrun a 700 mile per hour wave.
OK,,,I've got 20 minutes,,,,I'm gonna run like hell to the top of the nearest hill and get as high as I can.

You may have some notice, for example, nearby land or island is being hit with a Tsunami. If so, you have two good options. The best is to head out to sea as far as fast as you can. The second best option is to head inland and upland as far and as fast as you can. The second option may involve climbing trees or hills that are not ordinarily climbed.
The reason to head out to sea is that a Tsunami at sea is hardly more then a ripple. It gains force as it reaches shallow waters. You may not want to go up in a plane for the simple reason that you may not have a landing strip to land at when you return.

Hire a helicopter and rise to 2500 feet and look down and watch the "show".
You would have to go 100miles from the shore to escape from a 1000 foot tsunami. (if Tenerife, Canary Islands), has the inevitable major land slide.

Wax down my board and hang ten! (If I get really nervous, I'll probably 'evacuate' while I'm on it.)
