I doubt yahoo would "offer" purposefully anything with viruses however you can download a file and then (at least with norton antivirus) you can individually scan an item before you open it and it will tell you if it has any "bugs" to go with it.
also, you can always clear your cookies by clicking on tools if you have IE as well as your internet history. that will remove not only your history but also any tracking cookies that the source you downloaded from may have placed in your computers webbrowser.
