I mean out of all the sports and athlete's the US leagues have to offer does the World cup seem to have a big effect on you like the NBA playoffs, March Maddness, or the Superbowl? It doesn't have a great effect on me cause I hate soccer! But why does it have to be a World cup for soccer, why not basektball of tackel football? soccer is boring compared to american football and lame! I mean there is nothing exciting about soccer, no one gets hurt (not that I want to see it happen!), or makes super awesome plays, or anything! I know that this is just my opinion and it doesn't really matter what i think, but Soccer? What do you think should be a world wide sport? hockey not included because it is just like soccer except on ice and extra equipment!

It has been over the past 15 years that futball has become much more popular in the United States. Hosting the WC 12 years ago gave many American sports fans their first in person view of the passion, pagentry and excitement of a world cup match. Personally I was impressed as were many folks here who love sports. This event did more for soccer in the US than all of Pele's years here in the 70's
Soccer is the beautiful game. The international competition transcends politics and teams play for pride and prestige. The World Cup brings the entire world together every 4 years like no other professional sporting event. It is nothing short of spectacular in nearly every way.
I believe that one reason that the US players are so far behind is because for the past 160 years we have taught our children American sports games and made them what they are today.
We have been foutunate to have all of the rescourses available to have done this.
For futball you need only one piece of equipment - a kickable ball. Nearly every neighborhood in the world will have at least one of these balls. Many can play with the one ball and it may be the only sports equipment ever available to some. I feel this situation would naturally produce strong futball players and team unity.
The US cannot stop soccer from being the worlds most popular sport no matter how hard we have tried in the past. It's best for Americans to embrace the beauty and accept that our national team will have to become stronger still to make an advance in future matches.
Rest assured ... we are comming.

I've been living outside the US now for a couple of years, and I am starting to gain an appreciation for it (especially after I watched the Champions League match between AC Milan and Liverpool), but there are some things about the sport that are just annoying. First off are the flops or dives. It's really annoying to see a star athlete who gets paid tons of money to play, go flying through the air like he's been shot out of a cannon everytime someone gets close to him. And there's also the low scoring problem. It makes me sick to watch 90 minutes of anything without anybody scoring. I love American football, but if the score is 0-0 at halftime I change the channel. Maybe they should do away with the whole "offsides" rule. I think that would really open the game up. Anyway, this is the first World Cup where I've been outside the US, and I do plan to watch as much as possible. And now that the US has their own team in the English Premier League (ManU) maybe soccer's popularity will increase.

Yes soccer matters to me, its the best sport in the world for a reason. And u really dont know anything about soccer if you think that people dont get hurt. Soccer is going to be boring if you dont care about the outcome of the game try to pick a team next time you watch a game and make sure your watching a good game because the English Premier league is at a much higher level than the MLS. You should give soccer another try and its gona become very popular in the US soon, its growing fast.

YES!!! i am planning to go to the next WORLD CUP so hell yes, it matters.
soccer is really artistic. the players use both legs and hands too. i know hands are not allowed but don't they use them for fouls??
awesome!!! most players use their hands and their legs for the skills
soccer is wayyy better than basketball or football or baseball because the field is big with so many fans. the soccer fans are the craziest ones too and they really really love soccer. and i can see why basketball or football are not popular outside the US.
one goal in soccer is the result of hard work and teamwork so they really celebrate when they score... unlike basketball, all they do is dribbling and throw the ball into the basket with no goalie. and they score like every 5 seconds. that's boring

What does it matter? If you don't like it, you don't have to watch. I don't care much for football, so I just don't watch it, but I wouldn't talk bad about the sport. What difference does it make, watch something else while soccer is on, that's why there is more than one type of sport, something for everyone. It makes no sense to talk one down, because some people may not be interested.

I can see why this question is only for americans. You Americans dont find it exciting because you just want to see people score, but there are still a lot of Americans who do like the sport, oh and Im not American.

A lot of Americans out there do think that soccer/football is a pointless sport. I would love to see them try to get out there and play it. It is a sport that requires skill and endure and quick-thinking, and it is truly a test of all one's abilities. For that matter, I'd love to see some of America's most popular athletes, like baseball and American football players, get out there and try it.
As someone who played for many years and never managed to become very good, I have the utmost respect for all soccer players, and the world cup means a lot to me. I would love to see America finally take pride in their team and someday win the cup themselves. Not to mention am I incredibly proud of all the amazing American women who already have!

You're naive, idiotic and a terrible speaker of your own language.
You should brush up on your sports my friend. Hockey is one of the most physical sports in the world. Not to mention there is a world tournament for hockey, but of course you don't know that because you're a yankee. Unless America is involved in the sport it doesn't seem they are capable of enjoying it.
That's really sad because for the Americans that do appreciate other countries and their performances, as well as their own, have their names soiled by dispicable sports fans like yourself.
There is nothing wrong with patriotism at all, in fact I'm a proud German, however, in your case it would seem the only thing you know is to put on your helmet and drop your I.Q. down to 80 with George dubleya and shout "DEFENSE!! OMPH OMPH!!"
I'm sorry, I just don't tolerate people who call themselves sports fans with such one track minds.

I think its very wrong if you think like that. That makes other country think that we are on our own, with out unity. We have our own sport(football), but I think other nations really don't understand about football(its very aggresive, and we want peace, not war in Iraq, don't we?). It doesn't mean that they are stupid and girlish.
But we, Americans, some times just have to open our mind. We are not realizing that we are selfish, sometimes, but that is what others think.
Well, I like soccer cause it gaves a award for a brutal player. Not like football, and of course, like FIFA told us that soccer players are free of drugs, not like....
