DON'T USE CASTOR OIL!!!!! Here is a link that has a bunch of methods to naturally induce labor along with an explanation of why you shouldn't use castor oil.

That being said, I think that methods that work are merely coincidences and the baby would have come whether you did said thing or not. All you can do is induce braxton hicks contractions in the mother, because the baby has to release a hormone before he/she actually comes. However, when you are desperate, anything is worth a try! I am 39 weeks tomorrow, and I am going nuts! :)

Your baby has already started to work iitself out. However, your child is working at its own pace. 40 weeks is a marker since it's in the center of an average pregnancy, which ranges from 37 to 42 (+) weeks.
There are various studies that say that there is a hormone released when the baby's lungs have matured and are prepared to breathe air without risk of complications.
• Walking is good it may help bring the baby down further into the pelvis.
• Castor oil - but as a good friend and midwife once told me "it's a crappy way to get a baby".
• I've heard eating a pineapple (the whole thing in one sitting) may help... it works much like castor oil.
• Sex. Sperm does contain prostiglandins which does help to soften the cervix.
• Evening primrose oil, pierced and inserted vaginally will also soften the cervix.
• Other herbs like blue cohosh or cauliphilum (in early labor) may get things going.
• Your medical provider may suggest a cervical sweep. This is when a finger is "swept" around the circumference of the cervix between the uterus and the amniotic sac. This procedure is believed to produce prostiglandins and stimulate the cervix.
There are more but sleep and relax. Stress hormones do not work well with the hormones released leading up to and during labor.
Try your best to enjoy these last days, and each other before your baby comes.
Best of luck.

Dear Daddy,
I am not ready to be born yet. I like it in here. I am warm, fed, loved, and hugged by Mommy, like you wouldn't believe. You are just jealous because you can't be this close.
Besides, WHO figured my birthdate ? Some doctor that wasn't even here. I will come out when I am ready and not one day before. You just get busy and get our hospital bags packed, and be nice to us. We'll need you later, ALOT. Besides, you KNOW, I'll make my appearance when it's about 3 am in the morning anyway.
Love, your hide-n-seek Baby
Seriously tho; your baby will be born when it's TIME to be born and you shouldn't hurry it,....and for Gods' sake; don't go feeding your wife any Castor Oil !!! Once labor starts, she's gonna feel bad enough without having the runs, too ! If the baby has dropped, start counting....from any day, to 14 days....
Congrats, too, BTW !

Kind of drastic, but I've been told by people from India that women there who want to abort eat papayas, seeds and all. I don't know whether that includes the rind, but I think not. I believe that the agent which causes the premature birth, in this description, is in the seeds. Other than that, I have no ideas.
Good luck.

I have heard the more active your wife is the more likely she will go into labor such as walking but sometimes the baby needs help.

Forget it. Some old wives tales are out there, but the pregnancy really ends when both parties agree that it is time, or someone starts eviction, which should really involve a doctor.

Do like my best friend did. Take her dancing.
She was overdue and went to a wedding reception where she started to dance. Her water broke 15 minutes later.
