I've always been a big fan of George Carlin. It takes a lot of talent to be able to point out societies very worst traits, but then make you laugh about them.

I would say in the past: Richard Pryor. He set the way for other comedians and was looked up to.
Currently: Jay Leno. He's had years of experience and people today are looking up to him now.

Greg Proops. Manic like Robin Williams, politically aware as Dennis Miller, angry like Richard Pryor and unrelenting like Sam Kinison.

I'm really into Ron White at present, his bit on 'can't fix stupid' is some good material. As for in the past, the only one that comes to mind that 'stands out' is Chris Rock.

I can't choose between Alan King, or George Garlin. Both of them spoke about real everyday problems we all face, then made them hysterical. King would go into a twenty minute tirade about the airlines, and you laughing so hard your sides hurt.
Garlin is in the same league, they both made comical sense of situations we all can relate to.

Bill Cosby. When I was young my whole family would watch him talk about growing up with his brother. It was hillarious. What other comedian was there that the entire family COULD watch and all enjoy.

Either Billy Crystal or Bill Cosby. They're both knee-slapping hilarious and clean, to boot.
For comediennes, Rita Rudner, hands down! She's got good comic timing and is also hilarious.

It would have to be Christ Rock, there are so many good stand-ups out there, but I Chris always makes me laugh louder and harder and longer than any of the other ones. And isn't that how stand-ups should be rated?
