You'll benefit from doing an 8-12 month program at a community college. This program will teach you the basics of business communications (business letters, emails, memos, phone etiquette) and computer / keyboarding skills. It may include classes on dictation, basic accounting and/or sales as well. There is a lot of competition for secretarial jobs, so having a certificate or diploma shows potential employers that you're serious.

The link below shows a sample program.

It depends on what type of secretary you want to be. You can go to a technical school and take classes it takes about a year and they help find you a job at the end. If you already have skills you can find a temp agency they place you in that position on a temporary basis and will allow you to hire on if asked. The Federal Government use such agencies and that is how my husband hired his. College helps but it is not required unless you want to work for certain business agencies. Find out what you want to be and where you would like to work and go from there. I advise working for a medical facility because they are in great demand and if you are really good you can pick and choose where to work. Good luck

It doesnt require a college degree. You may need to do a small course on typing or something if you dont know how to type. I think there used to be schools that taught how to be a secretary.

You have to have a good brain.

I worked as a secretary for a year when I was in between jobs. The temp agencies would not hire me because my typing was too slow. They didn't care that I had a college degree.

If you are a good secretary, you will be highly appreciated and get some nice perks. You will have to know your boss' job as well as she does, if not better.
