the little time gremlins forget to put them back in the right place. They don't like dryers.
I saw this on an old episode of The Twilight Zone. Every second that passes, these little gremlins come and move things to the next second in time. Sometimes they forget to put things exactly the way they were before. That's why sometimes you misplace your keys and then suddenly they're right where you thought they were in the beginning.

I don't know how it happens, but it's such a pain to match them perfectly with one that looks the same! It's like "Where did you come from?"
My daughter and I play a game when we match socks,
we save all the missmatches untill the basket gets full, then we spread out all of them on the living room floor. The one who finds the most matches WINS!

Honestly I think the washing machine eats them, i really do not know why though...It is annoying though wearing two socks that look nothing the same, I finally just started buying plain white socks, cannot go wrong there, same style all of them

When you buy packages of socks they actually come with an odd number in case you lose one, so the first time you use them all you're like, "Hey, dude I'm missing a sock".

I swear if you put 4 socks in the fridge one would disappear. Its a fact of physics. Appliances eat socks.

I don't know how it happens but socks get gone!
I just leave them in the dryer and let them find thier own socks. We have millions....

There's a black hole in the dryer. It sucks up the socks and turns them into those lone shoes you see on the road.

They go over the top rim of the washer. You can get them back as someone stated by taking apart the washer or you can avoid the whole problem by getting one of the mesh washing bags from the dollar store and putting them in it before you wash them.
