Drinking and driving is stupid and had the drunk driver that killed my aunt been locked up the first time he hurt someone, she might still be alive today.
Hammerhead, your stupid too, and your answer is NOT funny.

The laws are not the problem. The laws are strict enough; the issue is the way the laws are applied. As always you must follow the money. Unfortunately the laws and the judicial process are constructed to make money for the government and the insurance companies. Yes this is the dirty little secret; they are in collusion. Just think about the fact that we must pay increased insurance rates for 5-7 years after a single conviction justified or not. Look at who funds the anti-drinking lobbies and anti drinking studies - the insurance industry. They take the high ground and say that they only want to save lives. Hogwash, look at how fast they dump you if you have any long term health problem that they can wiggle out of if there is any definitional difference that suits them.

I have been a breath alcohol tech for years and if I did what the cops do I would not be able to give tests.

The political difficulty is that it is impossible to publicly disagree with the people from MADD or AA or any other DUI organizations. They only understand the reason for drunk driving in a very narrow path. They are so caught up in the emotion (like those that described a drunk driving death above) that they aren't willing to do what it takes to get drunk driving finished in America.

To fix the problem we must do the following:

1. No police department can make any money from the fines imposed on drunk drivers.

2. For the first offense: two weeks in jail and mandatory education

3. for the second offense 1 year in jail

4. for the third offense 5 years in jail

5. for the fourth offense 10 years in jail

6. if you kill someone it is murder and you get 25 to life – it was premeditated as you went out and drank and then drove a loaded weapon.

No country club learning center, no money to get out. Just punishment. Take the money away from the process and do not allow any drunk driving convictions to apply to the arrest benefit of any officer's record. The cops will not have any impetus to throw people in jail unjustly and the drunks will have some real problems if they actually break the law. Also, make sure the insurance companies can not raise rates for any offense. If you pay your dues to society by going to jail you should be free and clear. End the monetary benefit to the government, give some real punishment and you will end drunk driving as we know it.

I don't have an issue with drunk driving laws.

I do have an issue with police entrapment and them pulling you out of your car and just because the smell alcohol is on your breath. There is nothing illegal about having alcohol on your breath!

My favorites is "How much have you had to drink tonight?" Well officer, I don't drink and why would you ask that question?

And " I watched you cross the yellow line , how much have you had to drink?" I feel like saying, well officer. I followed a police cruiser and watched it cross the yellow and the white side line 18 times! Guess they were too busy talking to pay attention to the road!

They abuse laws, and that is what I don't like about police. They hang out with other cops and generally think that everyone is a criminal! Except them!

Pulliing a persons license forever is a bit extreme, when you consider that courts are pro police, and in a lot of areas, like mine, there is no such thing as public transportation!

The laws are too lenient. The first time should not be a slap on the wrist. It would save a lot of lives, and it would make people really think about doing it in the first place.

In general, drunk driving is stupid. It is a stupid crime that hurts innocent people. You may not have meant to kill the family of four when you drank those 8 beers, but you should still be held accountable in the vain of the murder laws if you did it (murder 2 - depraved indifference).

But hey, that's just one opinion. . .

DUI laws are weak. If people will drive drunk, suspending their license is not going to make a difference. Now there is a device that the courts can have installed in your car and you have to give breath tests so often to be able to continue driving.

Innocent lives are lost because most vehicle fatalities are caused by repeat offenders of DUI laws.

Drunk driving laws are not near as strict as they should be and neither are laws against driving and talking on the phone. Both kill about the same amount of people each year.

The laws are getting strict about driving under the influence, and should be stricter. Drugs and alcohol kill moms, dads, brothers, sisters, aunts, uncles, in general all loved ones. I think the laws should be tightened to help innocent people from dying in the hands of those who choose to break that law!!! I know I would never get over it if my loved one was killed. Would you???

Anyone who drives drunk deserves to spend the rest of their lives behind bars. The laws are not nearly strict enough.

They should have 100 meter long 4 inch wide beam bridges over freezing water between parking lots and bars. If they can cross that, they can drive home.
