if i am not mistaken . if its FWD you tow it from the front w/ back on thew ground and same for RWD tow front on the ground.

I wouldn't take the chance with an automatic if your going a long distance
You will be turning the neutral gears and producing HEAT
This may burn clutches or Bushings since your torque converter isn't pumping oil with the engine not running
If you have a standard trans than your OK if you put this in Neutral

All 71 Beetles are rear wheel drive and yes, you can tow from the front IF transmission is a manual shift vs automatic.

As most people have said if its a manual box no prob just put it neutral and keep the speed down for safety's sake

dont remember exact numbers but I think you have to do less than 50mph and no more than 50 miles, some of the transmission bearings dont get lubed when being towed as the input shaft isnt turning or some such. dont lidsten to the guy who said its FWD, it isnt.
