America is a democratic republic still but it's on it's way to becoming some kind of capitalistic fascism. Somewhat like Nazi Germany except for the death camps and other such horrible things, were getting our privacy taken away to look for "terrorists". While I have no doubt they exist and are a threat were going way overboard about it all. Were waging war on an intangible enemy and in the process were losing what we are as a nation, were being tricked by the government into thinking we need to be watched to be safe, we need to think about a "post 9/11 world"

"Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to greater danger. It works the same in any country."

-Hermann Goering (1893 - 1946)
Commander-in-Chief of the Luftwaffe, President of the Reichstag, Prime Minister of Prussia and Hitler's designated successor

The second in command of the Third Reich

"These [terrorist] attacks are not inevitable. They are, however, possible, and this very fact underscores the reason we cannot live under the threat of blackmail…The terrorist threat to America and the world will be diminished the moment that Saddam Hussein is disarmed."

-George W Bush (1946- )
Commander-in-Chief of the United States Armed Forces

President of the United States of America

Its a constitutional republic. No, its not a democratic government like most people believe.

We are free, so its not fascist at all. In many other countries bad mouthing the President would get a person tortured or killed. America is the most giving country in the world. We are always the first to offer aid after world disasters, right?

So I guess, republic is the closest of the 3 choices you asked.

It is a constitutional federal republic. As for any intimation that it is fascist, the word has been bandied about so much so often by morons who have no clue as to its meaning, so that it has lost its meaning. The very fact that we can engage in open forums like this one, even publicly and openly, belies any sophmoric, ignorant attempt to label us as fascist. In real fascist states (North Korea, Cuba, Iran, the PRC, Zimbabwe, etc, etc...) you are imprisoned, tortured, and killed for openly opposing the government. So the next time you and your fifteen year old buddies buy into the crap that is spewed by those who should know better but can't help themselves because of deep self loathing, just know that it is precisely the fact that the USA is not fascist that allows you to whine that it is without the slightest hint of fear.

We WERE a democratic Republic. The Civil War changed that. Now we are owned lock, stock, and barrel by the banks. Look up the definition of facism. Interesting.

Technically, we are a republic. The way W & Co. are pushing "Homeland Security" and indefinite imprisonment, even for American citizens "captured" in Chicago, it appears that some would like to see it become a fascist or dictatorial (is that a word?) style government.

Plutocracy..ruled by the rich.
Some folks claim it to be a democracy, but their are no democracies since ancient Athens ( and in that only a smll percentage had participation) as democracy means direct rule of the people. Theoretically USA is a representative democracy which is actually a form of oligarchy. To participate in government in washington one has to have huge budgets for advertising which precludes participation by poor or middle classes except as stooges. The power of corporate lobbyists corrupts and defeats populist and democratic tendencies. Secretive elitist powerful government agencies like CIA also reinforce plutocrat control.

I think it's a republic. It does have some aspect of a democracy, but that's mostly on the local level.
