I don't think they all are, but there is always that handful of any nationality that tries to be better than anyone else. I know this, because I am American.

Because Europe has a long history and most of it involved colonizing other countries, so that Europe dominated over much of the world at one point (especially Spain, England, followed by France, the Netherlands and other countries). For this reason, and also because of the amazing culture, art, architecture, industrial aspects, inventions and discoveries accredited to Europeans, history is also often taught from a Euro-centric point of view--from the perspective of the powerful and the victorious. Finally, Europe is a civilized continent of great culture and beauty, which Europeans are rightfully very proud of. They view America as an experiment---as an infant that hasn't pr oven itself to be capable of longevity, and they know we lack the experience which they have millennial of. They think we rose to world power too quickly, and we'll fall quickly as well, relatively speaking, and they are just waiting for us to fall on our faces. Also, they have disdain for our lack of maners, lack of respect, general lack of education among our youths, and lack of culture...we don't focus on asthetics, only on making a buck. They see that the threads that hold a people and a culture and ultimately a country together are lacking in the U.S. And I think they are right on a lot of counts, and I also think we should address and correct some of our mistakes before it's too late. I mean, the majority of Americans didn't even realize that we are far from loved (as a country and as a people) around the world before Sept. 11!!

I dont know that they are, but if they are, I think its probably because they are more educated than Americans. America is a place were stupidity is "cool" and intellectuals are scoffed at and made fun of. I think most Americans can name more brands of beer than past presidents. Do you know who your current Secretary of State is? "America" is professional wrestling, astrology believers, religious zealots, and spending more than you earn. Americans elect stupid bumpkins like George Bush over intellectual men like Al Gore and John Kerry, and take pride and saying things like "Get R done". I think Europeans also laugh at the hangups Americans have about sex. The huge uproar over Janet Jackson's breast being on TV for one second is a great example.
Finally, Americans make a huge deal about being the "land of the free", but few Americans seem to take politics seriously. Far fewer Americans vote in elections than Europeans, and those that do are largely voting for the candidate they think is the most "likable" ("Gore is too boring") rather than studying issues, understanding party platforms, and choosing the candidate thats most intelligent, capable, and represents a platform they believe in. Many Americans simply vote the way media celebrities like Sean Hannity and Bill O'Reilly tell them to.

Because they were first. They discovered America, the place we call home. They endured and got through the black plague, among other dreadful diseases and the great potato famine. They also gave us modern day Christianity. Oh, and they can play "football" really well.
