Teachers can't possibly get enough respect, as far as I'm concerned. Teachers leave a lasting impression on numberless children. Think about it: don't you remember something about most of the teachers you ever had? Teachers have to spend all day with children who are not theirs (I always said God made us carry our children around inside us for 9 mos. so we would get attached enough not to kill them later! lol) AND meet the requirements set by their school administrations. How many of us could do that without going postal at some point? On top of that, most kids spend more "quality time" with their teachers than they do with their parents! They shape our children's lives in ways that we as parents cannot because we are too emotionally involved.

Depends on where you go in the world. In some countries, when the leader of the country meets a teacher, he/she bows to him/her. Some cultures value teachers as being very knowledgeable and students don't dare speak in school because that would imply they know more than the teacher.
In other countries, teachers are not respected for what they do in day. Not just that they teach young children or that they have training to educate others, but what it takes to do that job. Most people don't have the first clue what it's like to be a teacher. Not just work in a school. Be a teacher. Particularly in the lower grades. Teaching isn't just about giving information or sharing knowledge. There's more to it and that is what I feel many do not respect. So do teachers get enough respect? It's not about respecting the person, it's about respecting the job they do.
And in the USA, no they don't.

Teachers in many parts of the world are given more respect. I am a teacher and have taught in many different countries. I am from the USA, and find that I was most respected in Sri Lanka, Korea and Japan. Saying that; however, I think that teachers are universally paid very poorly -- and from that point of view no society gives teachers very much respect!

Respect given is based on individual communities, schools, students, and teachers. However, there has been an unusually high proportion of VIF (international teachers) chased off by our disrespectful students, and our school is the top high school in our system!
One has managed to stick around, but she says no contest, the kids here have no motivation, no respect. She says there's only so much we can do, and we do that, but we should not kill ourselves working for them when they will not work for us. She and her husband are from Venezuela and mine is from Mexico, and they all agree on that point, that the students are different. I student taught in Mexico for a time, myself, but that was a private school, and so the luxury of booting the unwanteds existed there.
I think the teacher from, where was it, Kenya? and the teacher from Colombia were used to students who wanted to learn. That might be a completely different matter from respect, but they seem to go hand-in-hand when I'm in the classroom.

I don't think teachers are given enough respect. When it comes down to it, they are the foundation of our society. Children at a certain age spend more time with thier teachers than thier parents, and learn quite a bit from them. A good teacher is definatley responsible for a good citizen in the future. If you look at our Western society today, you can attribute all of its successes to an educated society. Education doesn't come naturally....its' taught......by teachers.

I don't know. I am from russia originaly and teachers in college are not very respected. In high scool they are usually respceted especially if its a good school. I have hard time respecting those teachers that are not very good, mean, or won't go out of their way to help. You can be strikt but not mean. And if I feel like you don't know your stuff, I hate you even more.
