Just find a roomate you get along with, and without melodrama. Someone you can relate to and someone who respects you. Preferably someone who is neither a slob nor a neat freak. I would be cautious about taking a male roomate (since if it turns into sex, it could go sour and ugly), but it could work.

Does not matter about colour??? It should not do anyway? Resist needs to be knocked on the head by your generation. As long as she knows that your the boss and you don't feel that she would overpower you mentally then YES. P.S. take her out and get drunk.? If you like her after she is drunk then you will know how she operates. Some people cant handle drink, In fact you want someone who does not drink or smoke. Also you don't need a boy? You are there to learn.????.. OK you need what you need!!! but when you were at home you lived by parents rules. Now your moving a boy in. Give yourself time to grow as a person. Live as a single women? Have a boyfriend if you want ? you go out to get that. Once you live as a single person with a girlie flatmate (that you are controlling things in the house, flat whatever, SHE PAYS HER SHARE OF BILLS AND YOU DON'T HAVE TO CLEAN AFTER HER then you will never be afraid to be independent again.

I would not try to find one on your own...like with an ad or something in the local paper.
Most colleges have a service that will pre-screen applicants...then you get to sit down with them and set the rules.
You have to be firm about what you will accept from them as far as cleanliness, behavior, visitors, etc etc...
If you've grown up with brothers and sisters then you will have a good idea as to what you dont want!!
One last thing is to make sure that you speak with at least one of the parents to get an assurance that the rent will be paid...they may want to pay you directly instead of relying on the daughter/son.
If this is your first year....you dont want a guy....I dont care what you may think now...but privacy issues will arise...and you dont need the distractions!
Good luck...let me know how it turns out.

it sounds like you are racist. you are saying that you couldn't live with a black girl for a whole year. i am a black girl and i don't really appreciate that kind of comment. you can delete my answer if u want to but it was really rude of what you said. if you weren't racist, you could've just put an ad in the paper asking for a person to live with. it doesn't matter the color; it's what the person believes and acts. think before you type

Get a roommate who you expect will be easy to get along with, but who will expose you to different ways of thinking than you are used to. College is a great chance to learn, and not just in the classroom. Being exposed to different types of people will give you a new perspective on yourself and the parents who raised you.

I'd say keep yourself open minded on it. Meet MANY people before you choose the one that will be living with you. Find a guy or girl, what ever race---- you just need to be able to click with the person and get along.

Do what you think will make you the most comfortable. The question is, do you think it matters if she's black, white Latino, Asian, etc. Only you really know that answer.

I think your roomate should be someone who will help with the bills, someone who you know you can befriend, and they are caring. Not someone who would steal from you, or take advantage of you.

Someone who respects you and gives you space. Someone who gives you quiet when you need it. Someone who does not act as though he were totally alone in the apartment. Am not sure color of skin matters.
