i think maybe you are refering to a water table which is a so called lake and dirt mixed with each other deep in the grounf which everyone taps into for their water supply. those giant water towers you see, they pump up the water and then distribute it to houses. there is a constant fear of that water table running out, and we have to constantly dig deeper to reach the new water areas. this can caust tremendouse money. what contributes to this is also pollution, like if you dont dispose of a batter correctly, it rusts and opens and leaks into the dirt and eventually reaches that water table. our water supply doesnt only rely on this water table but also years rain and snow fall precipitation. i hope i answered your question.

Typically a water supply refers to the water available for what ever purpose you want to use it for whether it be drinking or irrigation. A water supply can be a surface water such as a lake or groundwater such as an underground aquifer.
