all the preceding answers are very good...here's one more turn on the subject.
the door shielding is in fact the little screen with thousands of holes. even if the glass on the door is broken, if the door screen is intact, there's no leakage. seems the frequency length of the oven (1200 0r 2450 megahertz) doesn't permit the waves to pass through the holes.
as this type of energy is non-ionizing, and causes the changes in cells by vibration, this causing the cell to heat by movement, and the heat from the movement to be dissipated by the vascular system (blood movement) in living tissue, id say that what ever damage you might get is easily rerouted and made up for. Food cooks under this type of environment because it has no living mechanism for heat redistribution. It would take an awful big source of energy in this case to cook a human in a short period of time.
id say because of the safety features, and the type of vascular system you should have as a young person that your brain ain't too damaged.

Microwave ovens are normally shielded with metal screens that prevent any leakage of microwaves outside the oven. That's why you have a metal mesh on the front window of every micorwave oven.
But if the oven is old and the door doesn't close well, then it's possible that you can get some leakage of microwaves on the outside. And in that case the part of your body which is closest to the leaking microwaves is likely to be affected more than any other part of your body.
Microwaves heat up water molecules. And microwaves can cause heat damage. Whether you can get cancer from repeated heat damage or not is something that is not known yet.

No. Microwaves cannot escape from a microwave oven, as long as it is not damaged. And even then the microwaves would just burn you or make you hot. The microwaves cannot get through the door because the grating on the front of the door has holes that are too small for the microwaves to fit through.
MICROWAVES ARE NOT THE SAME AS RADIOACTIVITY.

I don't know if this is cheating, but I grabbed this from a Google search (http://www.goodhealthinfo.net/radiation/health_efx_western.htm) and it seems to have good references. The article focuses more on exposed RF radiation though, rather than your kitchen microwave. Microwaves emit radiation at a wavelength that resonates water (since that's a good way to heat most foods). That's why the holes in the viewing screen are sufficient to keep most of the rays out. Your body has a lot of water in it, but the biological effects are much more complicated than "water gets hot in your brain".
You also have to consider how long microwaves have been around, and whether that's enough time to make a conclusive study. Sorry I can't give you a direct answer.

As long as it isn't really old or leaks out. You shouldn't have too much problem. If there were problems, law suits would be prevelant I'm sure.
