Take a table cell, for instance. I can put a flat color background on it. How do I put a gradient on it without making an image?

You can do this in IE but I don't think it works in other browsers (it won't cause a problem though, they just won't get the effect). Here is a page which shows a few options (make sure you are using IE).

IE has quite a few cool, built in graphics effects. Here is a list of them and a good starting point.

You can't. Easiest way is to create the gradient in Photoshop, and output it as a 1 pixel wide jpeg. You can then scale it to fit.

You can get a program and create the gradient, then set it as a background using html.

This isn't widely supported yet. It's upposed to be a new feaure in CSS 3.0, but with internet Exlorer strugling to support CSS 1.0, it might be a while before there's broad acceptance. Even Firefox and Opra don't support it yet, as I recall.

Pretty sure you can't. And if you can, it sure ain't standard HTML or CSS so don't expect to work on all browsers.
