Consider how deeply our culture in North America is influenced by sex. How does society in general view sex (positive, negative, good, bad, holy, sinful...)? From marriages, to childrearing, to education, to the workplace and economy, to politics, to law, to the elderly... How does sex within our society affect all these aspects of life? Bottom line: WHY are North Americans so obsessed in this love-hate relationship with all things sexual?? Is it good or bad? And what would you change about it, and how?

I have wondered this myself people seem to be obsessed with sex even at my age (I'm 13) people seem to be obsessed with sex I personally think that there are more important things in life than sex and I bet some of my friends would disagree with me on that and sex of course has a purpose a man and a woman have sex and they have a baby but being obsessed with sex all the time like a lot of people are I think is a bad thing and something we should try to get rid off.

I beg to differ. I live in North America, and I also travel a lot. To me it seems as though there's a lot less sex here than there is in other countries (particularly European and Asian countries).
But if I had to give a reason it would be that we have nothing better to look forward to. Sex is the one thing that can satisfy every person on the planet. It is something we all have in common. It surpasses the divisions of race and culture, and in some cases religion (I won't get into that).
Particularly being in North America there isn't much that we can't or don't have. Therefore if we have everything we naturally go for the one thing we can never tire of... sex.

North Americans are obsessed with sex for the same reason a starving man obsesses on food. Remember, this is the continent that had puritans running things and setting the laws for quite some time and we've yet to overcome that. We're obsessed with sex, but also completely uptight about it.
(Also because sex sells, and we're capitalists.)
Is it good or bad? Neither, it just is.
Would I change it? I can't change certain aspects of my personality I'm not overly fond of, so I'm not in any position to start trying to change others.

Actually, every society in the history of human kind has been obsessed with sex. North American culture just shows it differently then others we see, although, not that different then ancient Roman times (only we have means to have more people viewing and participating in sexual behaviors.) Muslim culture is obsessed with hiding sexuality, it is just the opposite of NA obsession but it still an obsession with sex. As for your second question women are not of greater concern then men in a sex obsessed culture. You mention pregnancy (which despite what feminist would have you believe affects most men as much as it does the women, just not by actually getting pregnant) You mention STDs or STIs as they are now called, men get them just as easily as women do, and if anyone is having unprotected sex, they get what they have coming to them be they male, female, transgendered, straight, gay, or bisexual. You also mention rape as a reason that women are more affected by our sex obsessed society then men, well yes, women get raped, but you know what, they get raped in Muslim society too. Rape is not about sex, it is about control and possession. Also, men get raped every day in NA, but you don't hear about it because they are mostly prisoners and most people couldn't care less what happens to them. So you see, gender has no influence on how much our "sex obsessed" society affects you, it just changes how it affects you.

I think it is because for many many people life has gotten so easy that we have become bored and lazy and one of the things that pretty reliably makes one feel good--for free and most often with no real legal risks--is the self-administered (or mutually shared) free drug of the orgasm. Think about it. Even if you regard yourself as being poor, very many of the poor don't have to worry about basic physical survival. Even the "poor" are walking around with cel phones and pay a monthly cable TV bill (the soup kitchens and churches can feed the kids) If you don't have anything else that motivates you, like some sort of personal calling or commitment into which you are willing to pour your time and your effort, then you are left trying to merely entertain yourself. But even sex can get boring, and now with the Wild West of the Internet available to us we can explore all sort of variations and even perversions in the hope that maybe that sort of thing will help us capture the magic of early experiences, Sex is still fine by me, but it is not the meaning of my life.

Americans are repressed.
Hard to believe?
We've only been legally allowed to have a picture in our private homes of sexual organs on a human for the last 40 or so years.
Germany and Sweden have been showing breasts on TV since the 1950s.
Howard Stern says the word Penis on the radio and he gets fined $500,000.
Hugh Hefner got busted for showing breasts (nothing else) in Playboy back in the 1950's and 1960's two or three times.
In America having sex with someone you were not married to (fornication) was illegal in 35 states until about 1975.
This meant that most of America was a closet Felon!
Oral sex was a felony in almost 40 states until around 1980.
Homosexuality is still on the books as a felony in a few states.
In most of the world a girl or boy can choose to have sex between the ages of 14 and 16. In the U.S. about 30 states forbid that until either of them reaches age 18.
Which means most teenagers are closet felons!
In most of the world anyone over the age of 16 can get served booze in a restaraunt or bar. In the U.S. you have to be over 21.
It is illegal for your parents to give you a drink before that age in most states!
In virtually every state it is illegal for a woman to sunbath with her top off, while in most every country in Europe or Scadinavia no cares and there are no laws on this! I'm talking on a beach.
Remember, the US has still not had a woman chief executive (President).
We are a sexist, repressed country with morals that come out of the year 1900.
On a scale of countries, the U.S. is above the Muslim nations about all these things, but far below most of Europe and Scandinavia, or even South America!
We are still a very conservative, backwards country.
We don't have sex education in school. Kids under 18 can't buy rubbers in most instances.
The U.S. is still very, very "VIctorian!"

In my opinion it is the men that are totally obsessed, it has alot to do with what guys are allowed to see and obtain. My boyfriend is that way he does not care about anything else. I had our baby 8 months ago and I have not felt the need for sex, and now he threatens to leave over that. He does not give me what I need, no emotional support for my daughter or myself. I think women can take it or leave it. Why should I give him what he wants if he can not be there for me in the ways that I need him to be.

North Americans are obsessed with sex, because we've been sheltered from it. Lack of exposure has made us extra sensitive, and over-exposure has desensitized other cultures.

If not obsessed with sex, then the obsession is with sects. I prefer the former because of the satisfaction.
