Mostly by selling advertisements, or commercials. They also get money from the networks when they are located in major markets for carrying the network programs with the network advertising in them. And they sometimes allow people to pay for "program length" commercials, church services, and other programs.
How did you think they made their money?

Commercials, every time you see a commercial on television, the sponsor of that commercial is paying lots of money, to the television station, that is showing it.

Advertisments, sponsors, bonds, contracts... Put it this way, if coca cola never advertised before.. do you think it will be the largest soft drink manufactorer in the world? They make billions off television companies, its natural they will pay big to put their ads out there! Television shows are used to attract people to watch the TV, so that advertisements will be seen... If there was TV with no ads, and the service was free - there will be no TV

Sponsors. The better the programing and ratings, The more sponsors are willing to pay them to advertise their products(commercials). Public broadcasting stations usually get their funding from large business and pledge drives.
