they use spatial reasoning. Just as humans will look at a room and try to decide if a sofa and two and tables will fit in a space, a squirrel will use the same mind picture to measure a distance between two branches before attempting to leap.
spatial reasoning is a form of math, as is measuring. One doesn't have to use physical number for measure

animals are creature of stealth and perception and survival. They are stronger than humans and more desperate then humans. We used to know how the world worked, but we don't seem to understand anymore. We are more petty, but out instinct is still there. If we need it, we can call on it. Animals have no need for aproximit distances. They are eithier There, or they are here.

If I were less inclined, I would say take a look at a 'creature' such as Koko of National Geographic fame. She certainly appears to have a leg up on her human counterparts in several categories. However, I have to give the nod to us for recognizing the pure beauty of what such a 'creature' is able to provide to someone such as me who is fortunate enough (albeit through video) to have witnessed what many people have failed to see in their fellow human... an innocence which we all possess yet deny for a multitude of reasons which I could not begin to list. --RB

Usually they compare size (if I'm understanding your question correctly). A good example is elk. Bulls will approach one another displaying racks (antlers). They move their heads back and forth using parallax to estimate the size of the opponent's antlers compared to their own to see who would win in a battle. If there is an obvious difference in the size of the elk and the antlers, usually there is no skirmish. If the elk are matched in size, often they will then battle to see who the winner is and then a mate is chosen that way.
