Linux is the most popular and widely used Free OS. It is similar too Unix.

While Windows dominates the PC market Linux is a major server OS. A large number of the web sites you use are actually running Linux so you are already a Linux user in a sense.

Linux really isn't hard to learn but you will need to read a couple books.

All the Unix type OS are pretty similar.

Linux is an open source operating system. Its is written by developers and it is free. The source code is distributed freely and others can modify it and make improvements to the operating system. There are several 'flavours' of linux. Each flavour has its specialties.

Linux is supposed to be equivalent to popular operating systems such as Windows or MacOS. People have developed programs to perform everyday tasks such as word processing, browsing internet, graphics editing, etc. on Linux. But some proprietary files formats are not supported. For more information, see www.linux.org .

If you are an expert with your current opporating system, learning to use Linux shouldn't be very difficult. There are several flavours of Linux. Be sure to research to see which flavour is best for you. I would not recommend using Linux if you are just learning the basics of Windows or MacOS.

Usually most people don't need to use Linux unless they are developers, or they bought a 'economical' PC which has Linux installed instead of Windows.

Linux is an open-sourced operating system. There are various versions of Linux, such as Ubuntu, Knoppix, Red Hat Linux and etc. The Linux is not as user friendly as Windows or Mac OSX. The graphic user interface pales in comparison to those found on Windows and Mac's. You need to be comfortable using command lines if you want to use Linux. However, I should mention, that there are efforts to make Linux easier to use as to attract Windows users to convert to Linux.

Linux is an open source operating system. The basic operation of it is very easy, but doing things like installing applications is strangely difficult. It requires a lot more command line knowledge.

It's great because it's free and basic stuff is very easy, it's not great because it takes a lot of time to really learn.

Learning Linux is just like learning anything else, you have to want to learn. When you learn enough you'll realize the power it has over Windows.
