it is a state issue, the states make the laws on marriage, the federal government does not. And in every state where the issue has came up for a vote, the people by a large percentage don't want it.
And it is already banned, since it is not legal ( excpet where courts have overruled the will of the people) it is just not legal, and no state has ever voted to make it legal.

Here is a constitutional argument:
1. Marriage is not mentioned in constitution.
2. The tenth amendment clearly states that :
"The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people."[1]
3. States have the power to regulate the marriage as they see fit, as long as it passes the "rational basis test"[2]
4. Rational basis test can be applied because banning gay marriage does not technically discriminate on the grounds of race or sex. Couples do not have rights, only individuals have rights. And all individuals REGARDLESS of their sexual orientation can marry only people of opposite sex. So each INDIVIDUAL has equal rights.
5. Rational basis test means that if a state can come up with ANY justification for banning gay marriage -- they can do so.
6. Justification usually used is "Allowing gay marriage would undermine the sanctity of the family"
7. While such a justification may not pass a "strict scrutiny"[3] or even "intermediate scrutiny"[3], it passes "rational basis test".
So there you have it, banning gay marriage is strictly constitutional and it is within the rights of any State if it bans gay marriage through democratic process.

If you are a politician, you oppose gay marriage either
* to win the Christian Coalitian vote
* because you believe a number of proponents of theories that gay marriage will destroy society, is unnatural, or will cheapen marriage.
* or because you want to take attention away from the current Republican-caused problems.

You can't call "non-religious" on this one. It has everything to do with religion, specifically Christianity. If it wasn't mentioned in the Bible, we wouldn't be having this discussion because there would be no reason to discourage it. Personally, I believe the government, State or Federal, should keep its nose out of our homes; especially our bedrooms. And religion should stay out of government.

I honestly can't think of a single valid reason why the government should be able to dictate whom its citizenry is permitted to marry.

This "question" has already been asked, more literately, on this heading. It is back about the 3rd or 4th page of this heading. I have a post on that one.
