It was a great book, but they should have written sequels for all the other Letters. I mean, like if "A" was scarlet, what color is "M"?

It's been many, many years ago when I read it, but I felt a profound sense of sadness for the woman forced to wear the Scarlet letter. We all make mistakes, but should all of our mistakes be broadcasted to the world?

When I first read it, I hated it...of course I read it as an assignment in high school english. The second time I read it, it was a great tale..that was when I was at my parents' home and looking for something to read. Now the third time, I've read it was when my son was reading it for his class. We like to read together and then have sort of a book club. It was even better. If you look at it and compare it to everything that is happening in the world...the book is timeless.

It's a great book. I loved the metaphor of the forest being a place where freedom reigned and the town was full of repression. that was deep stuff when I was a high school junior.

There's a lot of food for thought and some beautiful writing in it, but then again, I've always liked Hawthorne.

i had to read THE SCARLET LETTER with my class in grade 11. i didn't really understand the 'wording' but my teacher explained it to us in a very understandable way. it is an interesting story. i also watched the movie, the one with demi moore. if you enjoy reading books with hard wording and are able to understand it, i'd say go for it :).

the scarlet letter is a good novel and one which leaves the insightful reader with a lot to think about. a novel which bears some resemblance to hawthorne's novel is u. r. ananthamurthy's samskara.

I have tried and tried again to read that book. I am currently reading the classics, and I will pick it up, and set it back down for months after reading a paragraph. It is honestly one book I can not get into.

I dunno. It kinda sucks for Hester because she had to take everyone's crap the whole time and Dimmesdale, like a coward pretty much, just lets her take it. In the end, however, he dies. In a way he only has to tolerate the blame for a little while whereas Hester is literally branded with it forever. It is very unfair. Not to mention that she has to deal with her creepy husband following her around and trying to make her life a living hell...
