Your coach sounds like a dick first off. Second most states have off season limitations on conditioning/practices. For example here in Michigan you are only allowed 8, with a football practices , with a coach present. Players are allowed to hold like "Captain" run practices or weight train all they like. I am sure it differs state per state.

I had 3 a days @ 6 in High School in the 70s.

I ran 3 a days in High School @ 6 in the late 80s
later, when I coached college ball, they started at 5am.
(4am for disciplinary issues - like not being on time)

Now at Semi-pro level - they start at 6...before breakfast because it's cooler outside. That makes it safer to you.

It's common.
Do it - live it - love it.

I'm from northern Ohio, and of the 12 schools in our county I know that 9 have 6 am practices for sure, and two others possibly do (I don't know for sure). The only school that doesn't is a bunch on pansies that can't play to save their lives (Lexington).

I didnt think too many but my H.S had two practices a day during what they call hell week 7:00am and again at 3:00p.m. I think theres a certain amount of conditioning hours that you need to put in before suiting up with full gear (pads).
