There are 2 methods I use to clean the house.
#1 the 'piles' method.
I use the custions on the couch as 'places' to put 'piles' of things I am cleaning up. Example: Cushion
#1 is my Husbands,
#2 is Daughters
#3 is Mine and
#4 is Kitchen/Bathroom.
As you clean, put the items you have picked up on each cushion. Everyone is then responsible to take care of 'their pile' this leaves you unfortunately with your pile AND the Kitchen/bathroom pile.
It works great if you have lots of people in your house!
OR
Start in the right hand corner of your house and completely clean/put away/ or wash everything as you move around the room from right to left or vice versa. It's a little slower method but much more thorough.
HINT: Try to avoid 'chain' cleaning.
By 'chain' cleaning I mean.. starting to pick up the living room and taking a paper plate to the garbage, noticing the garbage is full.... you take out the trash while noticing the bag of garbage has leaked into your trash can... you then go to the laundry room to get the lysol for the trash can and a mop for your floor and end up throwing in a load of laundry. This completely ensures your house will NEVER get cleaned! The next thing you know... you're washing out the trash can, mopping the floor and folding clothes when you started out... cleaning the living room!
Avoid this method at all costs!

I had a friend once who loved her weekends and refused to spend them cleaning her house. She set herself a schedule of sorts. Mondays were the laundry, Tuesdays were bathrooms, Wednesday .. well you get it. Spreading it out over the course of the week meant only 15-20 minutes max in a given day. That coupled with putting things back where you got them made a huge difference.
At night, before you turn out the lights in the room where you are look around you. Pick up and put away .. takes only a minute but you'd be surprised how it keeps things neat and a better outlook when you enter the room the first time next morning.

The best way is to finish what you have started and make sure other people in the house do that to. I.E Someone goes to the kitchen to make something to eat. This includes preparing the food and cleaning after. If you have children that eat and make a mess and do not clean it up. Teach them to complete what they have started, including the clean up. Do a list of all the house work you have and divided up during the week, if you leave with more than one adult in the house, ask for help and distribute the work. House work is not a one person responsibility, it is the responsibility of all those who live in the house.

Limit activities to one room. Clean as soon as you finish using something instead of waiting and letting everything pile up like when you use a dish in the kitchen wash as soon as you finish. When you finish taking a shower spray the shower to keep it clean have a little spare time just sweep the floor especially if you drop something. dust every other day don't want any allergies. Keep a plug in airfreshner to keep the house fresh make up beds every morning and just straighten up things throughout the day. Choose one day during the week to just clean up everything.

when I use something, I put it back in its place when I am done with it. I keep my Dishes done after every Meal, so they wont pyle up and costs me dear time to wash them all at once. I clean my Upstairs( vacuum, dust ,Etc on Thursdays; Friday I tackle downstairs. The bathroom gets a light cleaning on a daily basis. Monday is my Washday. Timing and organizational skills come in to play. I only clean in the mornings.

i am a stay at home mom with a six month old little boy. I do my house work when he is sleeping or when dad gets home in the evening. It all seems to balance out.

I don't usually. I work nights and my hubby works days. And with 2 teenage boys it can be quite a hassle. Last week was really busy and we all spent hours yesterday cleaning up.

Invite people over. I find that I get really motivated to clean house only when I know someone is going to see it.
