Wow! Nice choice. It is beautiful, alot of things to do, especially outdoor things, close enough to San Fran to be close and also to San Jose'. Not trying to be insulting but it is a hippy community, very liberal very "open" if you know what I mean. Not a conservative or a christian within miles. Alright there are some but they are the minority. I did outreach with a church I used to go to in Santa Cruz and have vacationed there. I am no longer the religious type i was so I am not casting aspersions at either side. I am merely stating the facts for you to decide. If you are a liberal amen to ya. If you are a conservative, good luck to ya in Santa Cruz. Libertarians they don't know what to think about you yet.
Now, economics. Dude, the Cali coast is off limits to you if you have a budget or are claustrophobic. The entire coast line is very expensive. even further south in San Louis obispo(I tried to move there 6 years ago) is very expensive. My feelings would be that 2500 a month would get you a small 2 bedroom apt, far from water. But if you haven't visited, you must at least go. It may all be worth it once you visit and see the beauty. go to the Monterrey aquarium and visit pebble beach and see the 17 mile drive there, too bad you didn't go at the fourth and see fireworks on the beach.then go down to pismo and have the clam chowder and see Moro Bay, and Cambria and Big Sur and Hearst Mansion. I am getting jealous. Go and see
I decided on a 4 bedroom home on 1/2 acre in Iowa. That shows you haw cheap I am. Plus im from Iowa.
Good Luck

Santa Cruz is a resort area to the South-East of San Francisco. It has been the place for people to go for weekends. Many years ago the Beach was the main attraction, then the Boardwalk, which I understand is much like Atlantic City. Economically I'm not sure but I am certain that you can find the answers your looking for by going to their website and check with the BBB. (Better Business Bureau)"

I used to live in Santa Cruz. I don't know where you might be coming from, but you may possibly be quite surprised at just how expensive it is to live there.
It is a beautiful place, although there seems to be more and more of a criminal element moving there (gangs). It's not out of control however.
The beaches are nice, there's also the Boardwalk for kids, as well as parks etc.
Depending on the type of employment you desire, quite a few people commute down the mtn. into San Jose to work, which is approx. 45 minutes to an hours drive one way.
The cost of an inexpensive 2 bedroom apt. will run you probably $1500.00 to $2000.00 a month. Seriously.
If you really are interested in checking out more info on Santa Cruz, write the Visitors Bureau in Santa Cruz and they will send you a packet chock full of info on housing, employment, schooling, colleges, shopping, etc.

santa cruz was the murder capitol of the USA at one point. Its run by a mafia of law enforcement, courts, attorneys, wealthy. The things that go on there are the craziest anywhere. If you have money, you can buy protection and if you get someone after you yu will be hounded and arrested everywhere--at HR Block, the animal shelter, walking on the beach. Their are people there that are truly evil! Its not what it appears to be at all. Stay across the street from the Boardwalk in the beach flats area at a motel when you go to visit and book well in advance.

Most of kalifornia is becoming a nation of immigrents. I have a cousin there and his son had to learn spanish in order to take a math class. The taxes are 2nd in the nation as well as high pollution levels. the ratio of gang members to overall population is the highest in the nation. If i were to move to Kalifornia I would go towards Nappa valley. For at least you could be close to the vineyards and get cheaper wine to settle yourself from all these problems. Good luck.. also wear garlic
